Hello from newbie in Colorado

Postby Audrey » Mon Oct 24, 2011 9:28 pm

Hello, I'm Audrey from Colorado. have been insanely perusing internet on teardrops, trying to get my retirement plans (at least 9 yrs to go) in the works. wondering if I should attempt to make my own. I plan to actually live in it while I research and travel and stay at great lengths in potential retirement places. Gravitating to maine, along coast somewhere.

I drive a Beetle, so weight needs to be low. spent the better part of last hour trying to get a photo uploaded but not happening. looks like a great site for learning!

Audrey !! WELCOME !

I too tow a teardrop with a Beetle ( a 1965 VW Beetle to be precise)

I have a refurbished 2005 Little Guy 4 wide that weighs about 785lbs dry.

Prolly close to 1,000 lbs when ready fer campin ! But the VW pulls it with ease !

There are a bazillion ways to build one, so look around and see what interests you and then.. MAKE SAWDUST !

Hey thnx, you two. And that encourages me greatly to hear a 65' Beetle can handle one. Mine is a 2000, 150,000 miles and doing well, so will look at building one vs purchasing (will building save me money or not?).

Hello Longmont! I'm in Aurora.

Buildin CAN save ya LOTSA money...it jus takes LOTSA time, patience, and a bit o aggrivation.

But.. buildin is SO MUCH fun and so saticefyin with the "I did THAT" braggin rights.

With buildin, you can design and build ONLY what YOU want and with personalized "flavor".

Of course, buildin can also be spensive if ya jus go crazy.. but really...how crazy can a teardrop git ??

The end product will FAR outweigh the many ways to .. GO CRAZY !!!

When you build, you can configure it to suit your exact needs. You want lightweight, you can cut all kinds of things out that you won't use. My 5x10 is fully decked out and weighs 1150. Using the same methods (foam sandwich) I'm sure I could cut out a few hundred more pounds if I removed a some things. If you want to make the trip up here, you're welcome to check it out.

Don't write off the idea of buying a TD. If you enjoy the build, then by all means build, but if you want to be out in the TD then there is certainly no stigma to buying a TD that is ready to roll.

From Colorado to Maine, wow! That is going to be a bit of a change to put it mildly. I am thinking you enjoy winters, eh?

thnx everyone. Well, I certainly won't be getting started anytime soon, and would want to see one up close first. may have to purchase as well just cuz I don't own anything except a circular sander, table saw, and the basics,,,,,

thnx Mikey, will have to check some out. I miss the ocean and I love New England, and cold waters, Fall,,,,up, hopefully a change.

Longmont, I've got several full weekends coming up but if you're still willing to let me lookie see your TD, would love to!

Hi Audrey!

my suggestion is watch the gatherings thread.... attend a gathering... see home-builts and purchased td's... talk to everybody, take pictures, lay down in them... Get together with teardroppers, they are the best people in the world.

I live in Littleton and we have many teardroppers in the area! Welcome!

Pam thnx! I def need to join your group so I know when gatherings are. There are two guys in metro area who i'll be contacting in about 2 weekends to go chek out their teardrops. am leaning toward minimalist 4x8 (just me so no sharing in there, and I have a small car), but lots of questions about what to include or not.

has been fun perusing this site.
