Oh, Look! A Newbie From Oregon!

Postby Nomy » Mon Feb 27, 2012 2:56 pm

Hi, all. I'm Nomy.

I'm actually doing a cargo trailer conversion. I pick it up in Georgia on the 7th!! I'm getting a 6x12 V-Nose and pulling it with a 2007 Suzuki XL7. It's tow rated to 3500lbs, so I think I'll be okay.

Like so many others, the economy sucked away my well-loved career so I got to thinking that, staring homelessness in the face, why not just do this thing I've wanted to do all of my life? The nickname Nomy comes from Nomad, after all. ;)

So I'll be living with my cat, Otis; fulltimers. I plan on doing the build slowly as my budget can afford it. But I suspect the insulation will be done asap so we can actually move into the thing while I'm working on it.

I'll have tons of questions because this is way outside of Things That I Know, if you know what I mean. I can't thank you enough for the posted pictures - they're going to help tons!

My list in order of importance so far:

1 - Get the trailer
2 - remove the walls and install insulation
3 - put walls back up
4 - determine best option for heating as we'll be traveling through some cold country on the way to Oregon
5 - 12v batteries and charger....?

I look forward to chatting with you all! I can't thank you enough for this resource!!

Welcome Nomy!
Like the old saying goes...when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Way to make the best of your circumstances! You must be on the road to pick up your trailer. You'll have lots of fun learning to back it up. I have yet to come close to mastering backing up my Scamp, so good luck with it. I'm told it takes lots of patience to learn.
Have you made any design plans for the interior? There's a whole section on TNTTT for cargo trailers and some very nice ideas for outfitting them for camping/living. I just bought a Buddy heater to use in the Scamp. Seems to work OK, but you DO NEED to have a way to ventilate the trailer (vent and window or 2 windows cracked a tish) when you use it so you don't wake up dead.
Will Otis be up to walking on a leash? I usually take my little dog camping. He's used to the leash, but I'm not sure how my cat, Walnut, would take to being restrained (although he does follow along when I take the dog for walks around home...well it's more like stopping, then zooming by us, then repeat).
Be sure to post some pictures of your progress, either here or on your blog. We love :pictures: :pictures: :pictures:
Good luck on your adventure in CT fulltiming!
