Shout out from the PNW

Postby rosso75 » Thu Oct 11, 2012 11:35 pm

Howdy.

So I went camping last weekend with some friends. It's been rediculously dry here in the PNW lately, which I probably shouldn't talk about since it's the threat of constant rain that keeps all the Californians out. Or so I was told when I moved here... not from California. Anyway, as you can see, I like to take *stuff* with me. I don't think there's much better than a hammock in the woods.

While we're all sitting around, piling all our stuff on the one table available, we began discussing how cool it would be if one of us had a small trailer with a cooking area, a space to hold the coolers, maybe some tunes, etc. From there, it wasn't much of a stretch to a teardrop. I've always liked them, but never really gave it much thought. I got home, got online, and ended up here. No real brainstorms yet, or flashes of brilliance. No real dumb questions yet either though. Just fulfilling the obligitory newbie check-in.

The questions will come....

Luan, metal sheet, fiberglass, or some cool veneer? I saw a really awesome Zebrawood veneer recently.

Wiring? Batteries? Heat? Suspension? Floor insulation? Cooking arrangements? Lighting?

All minor details, right?

Looking forward to it, for sure.

Welcome from the PNW of California where it has been ridiculously dry as well!!! Simply amazing that tonight there was a heavy drizzle that I might classify as light rain.
 You will probably have you friends convinced in no time to join you in a build and then you can camp and caravan together.

A goodly number of us were tenters and came to the same conclusions. One of my goals was to make cooking and cleanup no more difficult than at home, the heating water to do dishes and sleeping on the ground and... got old in 40 years of camping together.

B, welcome to the forum from one of those  California, Washingtonian transplants  , been here 25 years.
We're just up the road in Puyallup.
Check out Teardroppers of Oregon and Washington.
Zebrawood is a beautiful wood. Once I built a small fixture for a department store in Movingue & I've often thought of using Movingue for the ceiling.
We have several gatherings in the drier months and it's a great way to get ideas for your build.

I still keep the tent, just in case. My delima though is that I got tired of sleeping on the ground a while ago as well, and I solved the problem with a VW Eurovan. I take the seats out, lay out the air mattress, and sleep like a baby. Realistically, I don't have an actual "need" for a teardrop. It would be redundant to tow sleeping quarters behind my sleeping quarters.

I may still decide to go with something really small just for cooking and storage. I'm thinking a tiny little kitchen on a trailer would be "dope", or whatever the disgruntled urban youth are saying these days in place of neat-o. The advantage would be that I could possibly tow it with my motorcycle too, and that has a certain appeal.
