Mini Canned Ham Guy.

Postby JERADS3D » Wed Jan 30, 2013 8:26 pm

Hi Everyone. A fellow Vintage Volkswagen fellow sent me a link to the site. I just wanted to drop in and say hello. I don't quite know if I've run across this site but I think I have brought up a few things through some google searches. I've always loved Vintage Campers. The need arose for some necessary towable sleeping space so I set about on some reference gathering and built my "Mini Canned Ham" to tow behind my 1966 VW Beetle.

My VW Bud... Bubba was sharing his new camper with me and mentioned that someone here had brought up some pics of my camper. I don't too often get to chit chat with others about building camping trailers so I thought I'd see what was going on in the trailer hobby.

Hi JERADS3D,

Welcome to the forum.

Your Mini-Canned Ham has been referenced here at least a few times
and it also has a world-wide presence, as I first saw a pic of it on an Australian
vintage trailer website !

This is the one forum I've run across that really has trailer building/self-building as one of
its focuses. I'm sure many would be interested in how you built yours. If you have
some pics and can come up with at least a cursory narrative of how you did it I'm sure
many here would be interested in seeing a Build Journal thread on it.

Cheers,
Noirm/mezmo

Hi JERADS3D, Wooot you made it.

Hey thanks for posting that picture. I logged in to the VW forum but it would not let me PM you on the first
visit, and the other forum you and ymoonshine belong to is private.

Not sure if ymoonshine is the Tag your VW friend used on the other forums but this is his newbie Thread here.

A few people including me would love to see your new build here in the “ Build Jurnail “ area. Of course we
love to see pic of your first build as well, if you got the time.

Hello and welcome , I was probably the one that you were referring to as I do have a few of your pictures in my album. For a while back I was considering getting a VW bug, but new I wanted a trailer and that was when I found yours. I hope you don't mind me posting the pictures, as I thought way back then as I still do that your trailer is indeed a piece of art. I'd love to see pictures of the inside of it.

Welcome from the Volkswagens birth place - very nice work you show in your pic.
What Type of hitch you use in the USA ?
Here in Europe the standard is a 50 mm diameter tow ball for all cars.

Most common is the 2 inch ball ( 50.8 mm ) , but you know Americans we have a Crap load of different hitches
we can use. The multi hitch is 1. ⅞” , 2” , and 1. 5/16 ”. Not sure what side the bumper dumper is.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I built this camping trailer in 2007/2008. I've been managing to tug it around with about 55 horsepower since then. I could use a few more hp's and an external oil cooler for those really hot Florida Summer Days. I'm sensible about it so it had been a very enjoyable addition to my VW Hobby. In the beginning the trailer got way more attention than anything else. I had never built a tiny camper but had loved vintage trailers all of my life. I'm handy with just about everything from Welding and Carpentry all the way to 3D Computer Animation and Graphics. I designed this trailer totally in LightWave 3D which is what I taught for several years and used in the Visual Effects industry for a short stint. Besides some friends and family members most have not seen any of my build photos. The private site was the first place I have really posted any photos or build progress of the 2nd Camping Trailer that I am about to wrap up. I am currently at the moment refurbishing/restoring the Hehr Camper Windows for it that are the same ones that are used in VW EZ CAmper Conversions from way back. This 2nd trailer will be traded to a fellow for a 1964 VW Bus. I don't really want to post anything up of the 2nd trailer publicly until the new owner has it and makes it's public debut. I can say that it is much nicer than mine. As for the hitch I copied an original trailer hitch but I changed it to a reciever mount. I use a 1 7/8 inch trailer ball. I've got to run out for a bit but I will post more soon.
