Postby drermer » Fri Oct 02, 2009 12:47 pm

I finally decided on a design and will start the build this weekend.

I'm interested in any comments. Thanks!

Nice! Is that a roof hatch or skylight?

Yes. I plan to make a roof hatch out of tinted plexiglass with a screen under it.

I like it. Any plans for a privacy cover? That would be a good location for a "roll top desk" type shade.

Interesting design. Nice shape on the doors... not sure if I like the suicide though...

How wide is it? And how will you keep it dry in there with that fancy moon roof?

Mike...

I figured there would be some "suicide" detractors. But it's the only way to get the door shape I want and have a simple hinge.

It's 64" on the outside of the body.

I haven't figured out how to seal the moon roof yet. I have some ideas. I'll come up with something or end up gluing it shut with silicone. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

ICE DAM TAPE .......

This sticky soft rubber is the greatest. I used it at my hatch hinge as well with zero leak problems. I am assuming your plexiglass lays over your other roof material. Cut the plexi 3-4 inches larger than the skylight opening. Fold the tape with the sticky side out in a "u" shape. The bottom of the "u" will be towards the center of the opening . This makes a rain gutter and water will be channelled away. Now rim the entire plexi with soft aluminum flat stock the aluminum will disperse the pressure evenly and eliminate pressure point at the screws that will crack the plexi. It also makes a nice finished edge.

How would I know ?

In this picture you see a black area in the center this is the ice dam tape at the center seam. With the tear almost 6' wide I had to use 2 pieces of lexan and "taped them together and added a protective lexan strip over the tape and ran 2 beads of 100 % silicone lexan to lexan and screw it down gently with plastic rossettes to disperse the screw pressure.

Nice to have ya, Welcome.

Your design seems tobe something you have been thinking about for awhile. Lookin good, tell me about your cabinet that looks to slide out from the hatch.

Hey, I'm just East of you, maybe someday we will meet. You really should consider going to the gathering this coming weekend.

Cool, Thanks! It's nice to see that others have used plexiglass "skylights" on their TDs.

I've been playing with the design for about two months.

I'll post some pictures of the cabinets stowed/deployed soon. They roll out on heavy-duty drawer slide and then one swings out on a piviot to a 90 degree angle.

I'll try to go to the gathering. I'd like to see some more TDs up close before I get too far into this build.

You are welcome to come out and see mine in person, it needs some attention.

I hope you get to go to the gathering, I have a schedule conflict and won't be making it

drermer,

I am very interested to hear any progress on this build. I love the design. It is VERY close to the design I have in mind. If you have any pictures, I'd love to see them. I would LOVE to get my hands on the Google Sketchup files, if you'd be willing to share them. Also, I'm interested in what trailer you built the design on.

I am in the PNW as well, so maybe we will run into one another one of these days!
Cheers,
Aaron
