Greetings From New Orleans

Postby nawlinsteardrop » Sat Jan 27, 2007 2:52 pm

Hi everyone, just joining. I am going to build a teardrop. I have had other RV's and enjoyed the heck out of them. what I don't enjoy is owning big vehicles. So I want to build a teardrop that has the following features.

1. I can pull with my 2000 VW Jetta TDI 5sp

2. I can sleep my wife and I and have room for my daughter to have a bunk. She's two. ( I was thinking of a bunk above our feet.)

3. I want our teardrop to be easy and ready to go on a moments notice. I like spur of the minute trips.

4. I want the galley to have a useful stove. I am not to iterested in many other features in the galley. Just a little storage.

5. I want to add AC to my teardrop because I live and travel where it is hot and humid.

6. I am also going to make the unit solar 12 VDC and 120 Volt AC, my personal background.

7. I would like a relatively simple build, that can be built in a resonably short time. I am not in a hurry but would like to move the project forward.

I appreciate any feedback, or ideas you might have to help me acheive these goals.

I orginally got interested in teardrops from my customer on my website. i sold many solar panels and inverters to tear droppers over the years. I was always intrigued by their shape and size. Really minimalization of asset for maximum enjoyment.

I plan on creating a blog on my site for my progress. URL to come later.

Anyways, Cheers and thanks for the great forum.

Welcome to the fun. I just want to add to Mike's reply that Camp-Inn also makes the Raindrop. It's a little bigger than their teardrop design, and can be ordered with a set of bunks and AC to boot. Just a thought!!
Again....welcome.

Welcome to the play pit Nawlins. The best thing about makin it yourself is you get to make what ya need. Lots of help to be had along with a great set of Generic Benroy plans that adapt to almost anything.

Soooo dig out the camera and go to work.

Hi Nawlins! Check out this other newbie thread. These folks need to accommodate two kids, but the suggestions can be adapted to just one.

Take a look at my album, too. I put a bunk over our legs for my 6-year old son. He loves it!

Jeanette... what a great shot... the family that sleeps together... well, they sure sleep together...

Great use of space. Is that set up so he can climb out through the galley?

I figure you have 2-3 more years before his feet touch the wall.... then what?/g/....

Arne,

This is what happens when he grows longer than the trailer is wide:

Actually, that's when I build the little foot box that will go on the outside when that little door gets opened.

He sure uses the holes in the galley bulkhead for crawling through, but the intent is to allow him to hang out inside on cold mornings while we make breakfast, and we can still keep an eye on him.

I like your sense of humor....

Is the koa on the west side of New Orleans open? Is FEMA and contractors still taking all camp sites?

Are the St. Charles street cars running now?

I can't come back till both are up and running....

To Build or Buy & New Orleans Update

Postby nawlinsteardrop » Sun Jan 28, 2007 4:51 pm

I wanted to build one, but am having 2nd thoughts. I am now leaning more towards buying one. I am not sure about used or new. I see the Yoter Toter and the Camp Inn. I really want a simple setup. Not looking for many features, more space. Because I want to add the cot Jeneatte did.

On New Orleans after Katrina,

Street cars are running on Canal. I have heard they are back on St. Charles but i was uptown yesterday and didn't see one, but thatr may just be because I missed them.

New Orleans is crazy now, the KOA in Kenner is open, not sure if many FEMA folks left. I don't see the workers like before. I think many may have moved into gutted houses or something.

Also the Louisiana Govenor and a bunch of out of state companies have insured 100% that there would be no fraud on the Road Home Program.
They have given none of the federal money to anyone yet. This one should mostly be put on the Govenor and a Virgina based company that got paid 756 Mil to give out 4 Billion in aid. I think like 80 checks had been cut so far.

I had houses in Mississippi and Louisiana, Mississippi has it's act together. They are moving forward. If you come down here, goto Waveland and support their businesses. That is where Katrina's eye came across.

This was my house there Image

So I now have a lot for camping.

Louisiana needs help, mainly with protecting us from ourselves at times. I do see progress in our state, many people have had enough of the crud and disgust we have had to deal with. I still think the state can be a bit stupid. I was born and raised here, so I guess I can say that.

Anways, there are really a lot of thankful people here. So when you see stupidity from our state, please disregard because we are fun loving, familiy orientated, and great cooks.

The later is why a really want to get a nice stove for my tear. The rest is just not so important. Give me a pot, some butter, flour, and a grocery store, I can make some good food, cher!

Anyways, Thanks for the warm welcome, it is nice to see friendly nice people on the Internet.

I was in Waveland, saw a 55 yacht in the woods about 1.5 miles inland.. Waveland got hammered...

Was in Gulfport visiting relatives last Feb for Mardi Gras.. hardly anyone showed up... they said crowd was about 15% of usual.. a lot had not returned, no homes...... signs up, "looters will be shot".... wow.

And my Waffle House was flat as a pancake.... It was as bad as I thought it would be.

Welcome nawlins,
My sister lived in Metairie until Katrina now she is back in San Antonio. I built a Camp-Inn clone it went pretty fast about 6 months but I was only able to work on it a little at a time. We sleep 4 in it, the 3 year old sleeps between us and the 1 year old sleeps in a bunk above. It is a little tight but it works. Good luck and see you out camping.

San Antonio

Postby nawlinsteardrop » Mon Jan 29, 2007 12:57 pm

We stayed in San Antionio for over a month, up by 1604 loop. It was by the Walmart at the Monte Cristo.

People from TExas were so friendly. It was amesome. I am sorry for what got left behind in Texas, though.

It is ashame when the mayor of Houston has too ask evacuees to leave. I am embarressed how some people have treated some of the friendliest and nicest people out there. ( Clarification: Texas People = Friendly) (Some Evacuees = Not So Friendly)AKA MURDERERS

Well for what it is worth, might I suggest some good Texas justice. Because we don't have any here in the city.

I also live in Jefferson, only about a mile from Mertairie.

I am glad to hear that you were treated nicely during your stay here. Also sorry you had to stay here. But I am glad you are back in NOLA that is a great city that is going to see some hard times for a few more years.
My sister had only been in NOLA for just over 2 years she was renting a house in Metairie but had just signed papers to buy a house on the other side of the lake in Mandeville. She figured her house (in Metairie) was flooded since it would flood the area if it raind more than an inch so she bought a house here two days after Katrina hit. Her house was actually spared by the storm but looters took everything and trashed it. I am glad she is back but it was nice to go visit her there.

Welcome from another Louisiana TDer (and VW TDI enthusiast)!
If you can, try to attend a gathering before you build/buy...this group puts on a heck of an event. My TD isn't finished yet, but everyone made me feel very welcome at LCG2006 in my little green VW Bus, LOL!
