Hello from Iowa

Postby corncountry » Sun Aug 09, 2009 9:16 pm

Been lurking on this site for over a year; learned alot from here on building our first teardrop. Made our virgin trip to Minden, NE in June 2009 where we acquired ideas for build number two.

Will post more pics later (we have dial-up, which is slow). Would like to hear from other Iowan teardropper's.

Welcome aboard, Jim and Diane. Check out the local gatherings in your area, perhaps the Tearjerkers can point you in the right direction... See, I have always said, you can't build just one, and you are proving my point. Good luck on your next build, but in the mean time, enjoy.

Welcome from another Iowan!!! Not many of us here.
Check out http://tnttt.com/viewto ... sc&start=0 It doesn't appear that there are any sites left but may be close enough for a day trip. We always welcome meeting other Teardroppers. Also there is always the chance of a cancellation.
Where are you located? I am from Manchester. 50 mi west of Dubuque on Hwy 20.
Hope to meet you later :D
Randy

Oh Sorry to hear about the dial-up :( Been There

Thanks for the welcome, Roly & Randy.
Roly, you are right about building just one. The next one will be lighter
so a 4 cyl. car can pull it.
Randy, don't think we can make Tears by the River. Have plans to go to the Black Hills,South Dakota and maybe Yellowstone late this month.
Maybe someone out there could tell me if we need a heater in the tear for this trip, around the first part of Sept.
Randy, we are located near Keokuk Ia. Three miles from Mo. and twelve
miles fro Il.

I lived in SE Iowa for a couple of years, west of Fort Madison, but was originally from central Iowa. Now live in Oregon and in the Jefferson State Chapter. Just got back from a weekend with about 20 other tears at Applegate Lake, Oregon. Very nice people, nice lake and right on the water.

About 30 years ago I traveled Hiway 101 down the Washington, Oregon, north California coast. Beautiful country. Would like to make that trip again with the tear. Maybe next year.
Still learning how to use this forum.

Jim

A couple of posts back, you asked about the need for a heater, on your trip to the Dakotas and possibly on over to Yellowstone right now the weather is just getting to be great, summer begining to ease off, evenings getting cooler and you talking another month.

Is your tear insulated? walls, cieling, floor???

This can make a difference, if temps decide to take a plunge,
But, overall I wouldn't expect you to have too many nights that are anything but comfortably cool.

My wife and I use a 12v mattress pad for those nights, that we need to take the chill off, before going to bed. It stays off durring the night even if the outside is in the low 20's

Welcome to the madness, hope to see you accross a campfire down the road, soon.

Al

Thanks for the info. on need for a heater.
Our tear has 1 3/4" insulation in the ceiling and walls. None in the floor.
Where do you get a 12v pad?
I just have a standard 12v car battery in the tear. Will that be good enough?

Jim

forgot the 2nd question

As to the car battery, I'd go with more of a Deep draw the following link is from the Electrical Secrets section:

http://jgdarden.com/batteryfaq/carfaq7.htm

the auto battery just isn't designed to be charged-drained-charged the way the battery for a 12v system will be.

Hey CornCountry,
Going to SD., if you go close to Wall Drugs, be sure to check it out!!!!You'll see the signs for miles advertising Free Ice Water, back in the Model T/A days they had the only cold water for miles. Plan to be there for longer than normal--its huge. The rock store is something else and the buffalo burgers are great too.
Til later by the fire--John T. & Linda 8)

Hi John & Linda,

We spent our honeymoon in the Black Hills a year ago in June. So much to see and do. We only had one week then. We did make a short stop at Wall Drug an the Badlands. Want to go back and spend more time and pick up on some of the things we missed.
Our time frame is getting smaller, too many commitments are poping up. Would like to have at least two weeks for this trip. I thought after retirment the pace would slow down, dosen't seem to be working that way.
I guess we just need to get on teardrop time.
