Hello all From Mo

Postby TerryLawson » Thu Sep 03, 2009 12:40 pm

I just wanted to say HI. I have decided to dive in head over heels and build a Tear. I had been talking to my wife for a while about it but she could not imagine what I was talking about. Then while tent camping last weekend we ran in to Queenie Jeanne, Dennis and their Route 66 Tear. (We talked to them for some time, and explained about the long night of no sleeping due to loud and inconsiderate prople that thought it was a good thing stay up till 2 am being obnoxious!!) My wife was impressed wiht the look and function of the Tear and the facgt that they didn't here a thing that night!!!! I have put my wife on the Theme of the Tear and I am on the build! (she dosent think I will get it done!)

I have procured an old Uhaul Trailer (pics to follow) that I am going to use for the base. As soon as I get it home and torn apart I will be able to better pin down a design.

PS: just a funny side note about Me and the family, we are the 4 T's Terry, Tammie. Tanner, and Tristen!!!!

The Base

Here is the link to the Craigslist of the trailer I bought.

http://springfield.craigslist.org/for/1343471652.html

I know its not pretty but I think its a start.
It was a friend of mine at work that had it, and when he found out I was talking about a Tear he told me about this trailer. I made a deal and got it for something I had laying around the house!! The barter system is still alive! :applause:

I have been haggeling with an old farmer who has a 5x8 very similar to yours. I pass it twice a day 5 days a week and call him once a year and offer to buy it. 3 years and 3 calls he don't want to sell ! It hasn't moved in 11 years (that I know) of so there it sets.

As an ex-manager for u haul I saw a few come in after a wreck and the frames are almost always intact.

Tear the box down to the floor but save the floor and lay 2 sheets of blue foam and float a light sheetgoods floor over it it will be fully insulated and ready for carpet or laminet of any type without fear of water intrusion. They are a bit robust but they were built to pull a million miles ( and I bet a few have)! It's a good start

Good luck Bob

Hi Terry, I am new here as well and am from Harrisonvillle, Mo. Your name sounds familiar to me for some reason. Are you into old tractors or r/c cars maybe? Anyway, welcome!

Hey Terry, glad to see you take the bull (trailer) by the horns. lol
On the North central site I ask if that was you, then thought I'd hit the newby site and sure enough we sold you on it for sure...imagine going to the out of area highlander games and camping in an eye catching rig. You will be the envy of all in kilts. Welcome to the TD and Tiny Trailer world.

Bob,
Do you mean to float the floor like you do the laminate flooring? And the blue foam, what thickness are you talking about? If this would work I thought about a thin layer of ply and the Laminate wood floor.

Welcome from Asheville!

Postby Alfred » Fri Sep 04, 2009 12:50 am

Hey Welcome to the group!

My Wife was sweet about it from day one, but I don't think she thought I was serious, or that I would follow through, until we had the trailer in the garage and I was hammering nails!

Terry

When I built "Barn to be wild " That is exactly what I did. After the walls were up I placed 2 laters of foam on this....

Here you can somewhat see the layers. The top ply is 7/16 "zip panel" a fiberglass faced osb

Here is an inside shot.

Here is a small shot of the laminet flooring in the walk in and galley area

Image

Every layer and every piece cut to fit snug and simply layed in , no nails no glue. When I finally get the baseboard in, it is all that will hold the layers down. I did carpet " The living room" and the break between the galley laminet and the carpet will have a metal finish strip to hold the carpet down. Looks like I need a trim strip at the door too

Here is a glimps of the carpetImage

Al,
I think that is exactly where my wife is at this point. She calls me "the King of Half A$$" I'm a great starter but have had a few things that I never followed through on!!! I tell her its because I'm an "Ideas Man"!!! :D

Bob,
Thanks, that sounds like the way to go!! And today I just saw an ad for Lowe's that has laminate on sale too!!!

Thanks

Welcome to the forum Terry. I think the more beautiful side of the Rayvillians already said Hi down on the Northcentral section.

good luck on the build. Like you I tend to be an idea man and not finish things so Trudy made me buy the first. A very small Little Guy. but I built the first Winter Warrior and I've even finished it at least 3 times. I keep changing things inside.

Oh yeah don't worry about asking to many question about our trailers. most of the time the problem is to get us to quit talking about our trailers once you ask the question.
