Newbie in VA!

Postby ecallaway68 » Sun Oct 04, 2009 2:07 pm

Hi there. I recently discovered the world of teardrops and have been considering purchasing/building my own. After much thought, I have decided to build my own. Something about the feeling of building something myself that I can take pride and a sense of accomplishment in! I think that I am going to go with Mike's Benroy plans and make some minor additions/modifications. You will see me I am sure asking a TON of questions! Thanks for your help and support in advance! I hear this is a great place to be!

 Way to go Eric! I think you'll like the Generic Benroy, especially if you go 5' wide.

Welcome. We're from Northern VA, and can't wait to get camping in our under-construction TD early next spring. You've stumbled upon a goldmine of information and inspiration here. Image

I pass through there quite often, or at least near there as I travel weekly to PA. Would love to know how your project is going. I priced materials today and shopped for some interior lightining ideas. Still trying to figure out which trailer to go with before I even start assembling. My brother has extensive home framing experience as well as interior remodeling so we are thinking looking at the plans that this may be a quick project for us! Oh and Ive done some pretty extensive commercial remodeling. The plans dont look that difficult aside from making the adjustments to the frame. We shall see! COME ON PAYDAY!

Hi Eric,

Happy to see another Virginian surface :applause:

We are in Staunton, so feel free to get in touch, drive over, and look at ours for ideas. Also, get in touch with Jim Coyner in Nelson County at [email protected]. He has a really nice woody for you to look at.

We have a Tearjerkers chapter here in VA with yours truly as director. I'd suggest you get signed on over at http://tearjerkers.net/ You'll need to register in order to check out the forums. It's the place for gathering information. I also post gathering info on this site in the "Northeast" section.

Hope to see you out next year.

Best,

Wally

Thank you for all the kind welcomes! Now to get some money and start a building! I see some beautiful Tear drops on ya'lls avatars and it is simply fueling my passion to get started! Any thoughts on estimated completion time for someone with extensive framing and finishing experience? I simply cant imagine as simple as they plans seem to be it taking much more then two weekends??

hey Ecallaway68,
Welcome to the madness and good luck on your build. I finished mine in 4 months and an outlay of about $1900.00 total[including bed, ac, dishes, etc.] The floor you can have done in one day of work, those walls...lets say it can be quick or very slow, depending on how you build them. If going with sandwiched walls, the quick way would be cutting out your profile, cut out where you want the insulation to go and cover with your thin ply. I stick built my walls and it takes awhile to do it that way and I feel cutting out a full sheet with room for fastening/insulation is a stronger way too. Just my .02---get started and the slowness will be in the details....cabinets, shelves, drawers....etc.
