Hi,

I'm new to the forum, not totally new to woodwork (but i'm limited to things with straight lines like book cupboards so far), and debating building a teardrop next year. It'll be small, 4x8 and I want it so I can avoid motel bills. Plus I love the look and I'm dutch living in canada. We have temperature swings from +30 to -11 in a 24 hour time frame. I want a little more protection from teh elements than I was getting, i'm not used to that kind of thing!

I'll probably start building next spring. My main bugbears so far are
= getting parts like windows etc, in the UK i'd go to chandlery.
= electrics..i need to get my head around those
= solar panels
= where to get a trailer/registering/canadian legislation etc on that.
= money. I don't have a huge amount.

Cheers
Deb

Scrounging I can do! I'm good at the gentile art of 'scrounge'.

(the username..I had a pet snake called Sir Hiss....and he was a sweetheart, very smart. Got him partially trained, something people said was impossible).

*Grins* right now, first, eye surgery. Then I get to play with powertools.

I'm currently living in Lethbridge, Alberta, but as an immigrant..I want to see more of this country. What I've seen so far is stunning and gorgeous!

Hi Deb,
Welcome to the forum! I, too, am an immigrant, except I moved from Canada to the US. And I, too, am a book shelf builder attempting to build a teardrop. :designing: Hopefully others from Canada will chime in with sources for supplies and answers to your questions.
Enjoy researching, "scrounging", and building your teardrop!

Hi Deb,

Welcome.
what do you mean by " dutch living in Canada?"
I am Dutch and living in the Netherlands, is this the same?

HI all,

sorry for the delay, I had lasers zapped at my eyes last week (sound a lot sexier than it is).

Mcspin50 - Awesome, maybe we can talk online at least about some of the canada-specific foibles and legalities? Good luck at least!

H@nk, Wat ik bedoel is dat ik een Gouwenaar ben die naar Lethbridge is geimigreerd (and to keep all the people who can't read dutch in the loop, I just said I was from Gouda and emmigrated to Lethbridge)

Starleen2: thank you!

Hi Deb,

How surprising, I live only 12 km away from Gouda, in Nieuwerkerk aan den Ijssel and I work in Gouda. As a cabdriver. Wow, how small the world can be.

Welcome to the group.

He, its a small world indeed! I miss a good dutch bike you know? Not one with a terugtraprem but a good, decent, adult bike. Three speed, jacket protector, rokbeschermer, and snelbinders. Can't get 'em for love or money here, there's a 1.5 year backlog both out of vancouver and calgary for a batavus. Now there is a busiiness opportunity! *Grins*

HI Mukilteo, i'm not suprrised to be honest. Migration is part of life and a good thing. ;-) Fresh blood and ambition and all that.

Yup, my dad was from te UK, as was my mum. I was born there, raised in Gouda, consider myself dutch...but i've lived there, the UK, Eire, New zealand, USA and now Canada. Sometimes it takes a while before we find somewhere we're willing to settle.

Sorry to say, its not a rokbeschermer but a jasbeschermer. You would look on e bay or a site like that, there you find all the dutch bikes you like. Newest rage in Holland is a bike with electrical trapondersteuning.

We're going to have to disagree then as i learned a good bike has both. I looked on ebay, sadly I kept hitting meisjesfietsen and while i'm short..i'm not that short!

huh. I could see it here as we have a coulee (big big dip) in town that i cannot cycle over for love or money......but holland is flat! Besides, why not just get a brommertje then?
