Another Newbie from the Southeast

Postby sleepercatcher » Mon May 21, 2007 6:47 am

Hello from the Southeast corner of Tennessee. My interest in homemade campers is genetic. My grandfather built one in 1947 on a 1931 Chevrolet frame. I enjoyed playing in it in my grandparents garage as a child. It hasn't been pulled on a camping trip since around 1950. I'm trying to decide whether to go with restoration or start a teardrop from scratch. I've picked up a lot of ideas from the hall of fame and from reading posts.

You know Grandpa would be smilin' if you were to rebuild and refine his creation. The running gear has to be bullet proof and the frame is probably real substantial. I would put the time into restoration after all it's a family heirloom. How many folks at a gathering can say their tiny trailer has served 3 generations ?

Image to the playground SC. Family heirlooms are special. I know because we don't have any. :( You can always build a modern teardrop that is light weight and restore your Grandfathers Tear. Keep it for special occasions.

We do have a thing for the pictures so please indulge us. Would love to see your Grandfathers creation.

To rebuild or not to rebuild?

Postby sleepercatcher » Mon May 28, 2007 6:25 pm

How about some advice. I’ve looked at the trailer. It’s not a teardrop, just a camper. It’s 12’ long 6’ wide and 7’ tall. The exterior walls are 3/8” plywood that havn’t been painted since construction. The top is aluminum. The running gear is the back half of a 31 Chevy that was converted to a trailer. The wheels are 20” spoke wheels, no tires. I’m working on getting the pictures put online. I’m thinking if it's rebuilt, I’ll have to separate body from frame and pretty much start over. Any thoughts?
