I've decided to build a Grumman 2 to Andrew's design. I talked to my frame fabricator today and we're forging ahead. I posted more in the Grumman 2 thread under Traditional Designs.

Thought I'd better get over here to the correct thread and say howdy. :) Mike already welcomed me there...guess I got this bass akwards.

 Bass anything is good. You have a great start deciding on a style. Took me months and help from Mike and Andrew to get mine.

Just remember that we gotta have pictures. Keeps Aunti's bubble oil level.

Sense of humor helps too!

Enjoy

Ummmm....so far it's taken me about four years to get to this point! I read Larry and Diane Sorenson's web site when it was still pretty new!!!

Things got put on hold for much bigger things but then I came to my senses (thanks in part to the price on the fuel pumps here in WA state) and decided the teardrop I always wanted would work just dandy behind our new-to-us VW Beetle TDI. Since I had studied so much before (and still have a bunch of CAD drawings I had done earlier) as soon as I saw the Grumman 2 I knew it was "the one". Guess if you let the pot simmer for a few years you finally get something out of it (not saying what mind you!).

I'm glad to be here and thank you for the welcome (cool gif!).

Hi Lee,
I'll leave it to Paul from down under to bug you aboot your avatar (unless thats really you), but welcome to the board!
We're getting together in Morton, WA this weekend if you want to meet a great bunch of people and see 50+ teardrops and TTTs.

"This year we will be camping at Gus Backstrom Park in Morton. Take exit #68 off I-5, head East, and you’ll be on Highway 12 for 30 miles. When you see the “Welcome to Morton” sign (and the cemetery), turn left onto 7th. Pass the hospital and, after the stop sign, you’ll see the Park on the right."

Come for a day if you can. I'm sure the several hour drive will save you 10 times the time on your build.

Hope to see you (course I won't recognize you),

Welcome Welcome :)

This forum is a great source of info.

The gas prices are sure going to put the TD on the road in greater numbers.

Hmmm...not sure what the avatar thing is about since I just got here. :o I see a lot of folks have photos of themselves and perhaps that's where we're heading with this. I'll have to enlist the help of my wife if that's the case as I don't actually have a photo of myself (I'm always the one behind the lens!).

Thanks for the welcome. I may be able to head down that way on Sunday as I work on Saturdays. Will folks still be there then?

[EDIT: Well, I looked through three computers worth of photo files...no me. A lot of folks tell me I look like Robin Williams...guess that's as close as I can get at the moment.]

I haven't lost "the driver's seat yet" It sure is nice to have a second and third pair of hands to help and hold things. :D Worked for a couple hours last night and boy does my back creak today.

Hi Les,
We are going to be at the Gathering (NW Spring Fling)in Morton until after the potluck Sunday evening and then head home.
Most folks will be there until after the Monday morning French Toast breakfast.
There's a button at the top of the screen, bottom right 'Destinations' that takes you to a list of more events than you can attend. You have to pick and choose each year.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the information on the Spring Fling and the encouragement. I told my wife I was thinking I'd make the run down on Saturday...she said "not without me"! So I guess it's a go. We're pretty early risers but I don't know how far it is to Morton from here (hmmm...we're 20 miles from exit 230, you say to go to exit 68 (that's 182 miles) then another 30...looks like 260 just about even). Guess that'll put us there in the late morning after a 4 hour dirve or so. :?

See you there. :applause:

The Grumman that Andrew has been working on is a great design.
So I would say you are off to a great start. :applause: :applause: :applause:
I don't remember how many years it was when I first was checking out TDs on the internet and before we started building on, before this forum was around. The timing just has to be right.
So good luck on your build, yes we will wants lots of pics :pictures:
Now only for us, but it will be a good record for yourself.
I'll be following your progess, as that is a design I like.

Excellent Les!

Take a look in my album and you'll be able recognize our rig. Can't miss the girls anyway.
Come by and say howdy and I'll help you find your way around.

20 miles to I5 - You must be pretty close to Deception Pass.

Rod and Trudy Glasett who host the NW Spring Fling live in Anacortes.
Pretty small world, ain't it :applause:

Thank you for the welcome. :)

I was looking back through some of my TD stuff and all the earliest photos I saved and bookmarks were from almost exactly 5 years ago in 2002. Sheesh! Took me awhile to come around to the sensible side.

I looked through your album; you have a very nice looking TD. I like the retro look and the wire wheels!

I'm good about taking photos of my work...apparently just not good about having photos of my self! Guess I better fix that. :D

Ah! I had looked at your album before (I'm trying to get through them all!), as soon as I saw the painting on the front of your TD I recognized the rig. My wife loves that as she's an artist (painter). She's likely to paint our Australian Cattle Dogs (Blue Heelers) on our TD!

You nailed it! We live at Deception Pass in Cornet Bay not far from the marina and the Environmental Learning Center. I had seen something on the TOW site about Trudy and Rod but didn't pursue contacting them as I figured they'd be pretty darn busy getting ready for Spring Fling. Now that I'm making the trek down there hopefully I'll get a chance to meet them.

I didn't realize Morton was that far away! About the same distance from here as Seattle is from Spokane; just a lot more traffic on I-5 south then on I-90 east of Ellensburg. It'll be a long day but worth it to see all the TDs and meet a bunch of enthusiasts.

We'll be in a Platinum Gray Volkswagen New Bettle TDI (wow, that's a mouthful!). Glad we have that to make the trip in; it's very stingy with fuel. :)

I didn't get an avatar photo posted until I had gone to the first gathering & got one with us in front of our teardrop. So if it takes a little while don't feel too bad.
We have just made it to our first gathering and we still have a lot of work to do on our TD.
I would say it took about 5 years for us inbetween first thinking & looking and getting back into it. A lot more info available now, first time just seemed too expensive especially for the trailer frame. We ended up with an old trailer frame with THE WHEELS  , so that sort of changed everything.
