Another Chicago area newbie

Postby pigcooker » Sun Jul 08, 2007 10:43 am

Hello everyone, Doug here, a.k.a. pigcooker. Saw an ad for a teardrop , checked it out, needed more info., I've been hangin out here a few weeks. ( wife thought I was up to no good ) Recently sold a small 1964 Hi-Lo, about 7x9- just enough room for the two of us,and stand up too. I gotta stand up, "gettin' old". I really like the Winter Warrior, Mike, and the Super Sized Weekender looks great too. The W/W looks puzzling though, any plans available? There is another newbie, DonKro about 5 miles from me, maybe we could exchange ideas? or swap lies & drink beer. Later Y'all, Doug

Andrew drew up a metric version of the winter warrior. Let me see if I can find it.

I have been optimizing the WW cause I plan on building another one.

Are you interested in a curved WW or a sharp cornered WW?

Doug:
Welcome to the madness. They say timing is everything, well we had a gathering @ Cliffside park this spring, in Racine, WI Just a little ways up I94 from the IL/WI border. You could have taken a run up and checked out about 20 TD's in one spot. Keep an eye on the notices under Midwest for our next one. "Cooler Near The Lake" We had several people from IL come, some with TD's, others just to look. All were welcome. Both owners of Camp-Inn were there too. Plenty of homebuilts to check out.

I guess I posted my first post in the wrong place, I'll figure it out. TLC thanks for the welcome. The Racine gathering would have a good learning tool, thanks. Mike, I made a copy of the metric plan, converted most of the numbers to decimals so far. Its still a little hazy to me. I looked at Ray V's build pictures, looks more complex then Andrews plan, or am I missing something ? I like the Square design, curved looks too intimidating for me. Doug

If the picture is wider than the forum message, then it will stretch the rest of the forum message out to the width of the photo.

Doug welcome to the maddness. Our WW looks a bit complicated because I thought I had to build it to with stand sub zero weather. So i built up 1" thick wall panels. One built out of Plywood like Mikes Escape hatch would be alot less complicated. It does take 3 panels for each side though while a teadrop only needs one. It takes a front outer, rear inner and the hatch side panel. After you set up the outer and inner wall you do the roof just like a teardrop than mount the hatch panels to the back or the trailer to do the hatch roof. I wish now in hind site that I had taken more pics of the build.
I do recommend that you hinge the top back panel at the roof this makes set up a lot easier.
Mike and i have both built one of these and we'll both help you as much as we can.
GAry
Where ever we raise the hatch is home.
Darn blank states keep getting further away and we keep traveling slower ain't never gona get this map full.

Hi Doug,

Welcome to the board.

Gary and Mike's WW's are a great design. And a good choice for your build.

Welcome to the forum!

You got my attention for three reasons:

1. The user name!
2. Location
3. You're interested in this site.

Though as a fellow BBQ nut and slow smoker, #1 is of course my main reason! :D

BTW folks - BBQ is low and slow... what most folks call BBQ is really called grilling :Flippin Burger:

Now get busy building that WW!!!

SAME HERE!!!

But the number 4 reason I love Doug already is because he's holding a beer in his Avatar.

Not my #1 brand of choice, but my second.
Here we go again!

To the playground Doug. We will have to convert you to Dutch Ovens :R Remember what Gary said as you begin your build. It is very easy to forget to take pictures of every detail when you are on a roll.

However---Da MadOne and the Aussie and Aunti have a need 8) Oh and all the others too. Keeps the bubble oil level. ;)

Gary; Your explanation makes it much clearer, thanks. I too want it insulated. Been to the Smokies in February - COLD!
***********************************************************
SaGR; Thanks for the comments. I built a smoker too. Just another item sitting in the shed. Got a new toy - check out www.lacajachina.com - works nice. Did 2 pork shoulders --- 3 1/2 hours!
***********************************************************
Mike & Miriam; Thanks for the encouragement. Trying to learn one thing at a time. DO's will have to wait.
***********************************************************
Ira; This week's sale: High Life 30 Pk for $9.99....need I say more?

Thanks to all..........Doug
