Hi guys, I've worked most of my life in building maintenance, can weld & have a nice workshop.

I also have a rusty old 7' X 4' (internal) box trailer.

The plan is to cut the sides off & build some sort of canopy, to enable me to sleep in the back for a night or two.

My wife is too ill to be going anywhere, so it's just me.

This looks a great place for some inspiration- I'd like to build something with some nice curves that looks good.

to the playground Seanie. We can probably help given some more information..

I am wondering why you want to remove the sides. Why not put some windows and a door in. We have seen a few really nice conversions here. For some ideas look here:

Have fun and ask away. Sorry about you wife.

Thanks Miriam- by a 'box' trailer, I mean an open one, with sides about a foot high- the body is well rusted, I think the chassis is all I can save.

Seanie,

Sorry to hear about your wife being ill.

It sounds like you have the skills and equipment to build whatever you envision. As long as the frame isn't rusted apart you should be able to weld up whatever bracing it might need. My next door neighbor is rebuilding her travel trailer and I have been helping her with the welding on it. Yesterday we welded up the mounts for her gray water tank. She also has a fresh water tank she needs mounting. The only down side is welding when it's 105 degrees outside.

Remember our montra, "Take pictures. Post pictures. Take pictures. Post pictures."

OK OK, I posted some pics!!

Thanks for the concern for my wife- she's far too young to have health probs. She enjoys her life though & I sure enjoy being with her.

Yeah it gets pretty hot here in summer Joanne- it's been 117 degrees

Lucky I have a nice big workshop.

I took an early retirement due to health reasons, & spend my time restoring my tractors, riding my motorcycles & doing up the house. (Amongst other things)

Hi Seanie, welcome and glad you are planning on building a camping trailer. By Oz, I assume you are in Austrailia. I would be nice to see more info in your Profile, it would help us to know you better.

Since you already have a trailer, now all you have to do is decide what size you want to build, come up with your favorite profile, choose the exterior roof and wall covering and what kind of stuff you plan to install in your galley. Other than that, you are well on your way. Do take pics, ask questions and enjoy the build and I am sure it will be one of the few around your home town.

Hi Seanie, Welcome to the mayhem, Mate. Like Roly asked, whereabouts in Oz are you. With Temps up around 117F, it could be anywhere apart from Bribane, hey
Have fun while your here and ask heaps. If you're close to Adelaide, get in touch. I'll be more than willing to help if I can.
Cheers
Paul

Seanie, love the hat..! When I was at Manly a few years ago, I bought one.. I'll post a pic of it in a day or two.. it's my favorite rain hat....

And, welcome... if you're talking about that yellow trailer in your album? It doesn't look rusty at all...

Yes I do mean Australia Roly- the SE of SA to be precise. I'm in my mid 40s, retired early for health reasons, & to care for my wife. (She's well worth caring for too)

I've since bought a new hat Arne- after it was chewed up the second time by the darn dog, there wasn't much left of it!

That pic of the yellow trailer was taken when I first got it- it was a $180 rustbucket, that I did some work on to make it look good. I've had the poor thing for 10 years & done thousands & thousands of miles with it- it's a bit sad now...

Thanks for the welcome- by the time I start work I should have a camera that works :)

It'll be a while before I can actually attack the trailer- we need a new one for general use first.

8) G'day, Seanie and welcome to the forum.
And, if it seems we get a little pushy about seeing pictures, well, we really do love to see them and live vicariously through the viewing. Keep us posted and best to the wife.

Welcome!

Hello Seanie! That trailer looks like it's in pretty good shape! However, if it didn;t have a good life expectancy, you might want to build a new teardrop pn top of a new chassis. (You know, the old parable about new wine in old wine skins.) New from the bottom up. ANyhow, all the best to you and your wife! Good luck with your project! --Vic

Thanks Joanie & 49er- no drama about the pics, but if anyone wants pics of my wife- you'll have to pay!

Yeah 49er, that's what I've been thinking, maybe keep the old trailer as is & buy a new chassis.
