Just bought a used trailer

Postby Nortz » Thu Sep 06, 2007 6:05 pm

My wife and I just bought a trailer that was a small boat trailer converted into a 4 by 6 utility trailer. My plan is to lift the box off the top and put a teardrop on. When my wife wants to haul mulch, just swap the tops. Also, if I ever get a small boat, the rollers are still there.

Any one think this is a bad idea?

Just one word ---------

Any PICX???????

Welll, two words.

And, some have made convertibles. It's not a bad Idea if you want to go to the trouble of swapping.

I just opted for 6 different trailers
Collected over the last 40 years, of course.

Welcome Nortz... It's not a bad plan, others have done it. For me naaaa... Little utility trailers can be had so cheap I'd rather have both. When I'm ready to go camping I just hitch up and go... everything is always ready. If the utility is sitting there with a load of crap for the dump... no biggie. That's just how I like it anyhoo. ;)

You've got to be careful of the boat trailer. Its designed to have weight on the tail end of the trailer and not have a whole lot of rigidity to itself. This is due to the rails being parallel and the crossmembers below the horizontal plane. Also, most boat trailer have a long single tube tongue. With a little weight in the right spot, the tongue will break.
However, if applying rigidity across the plane of the rails, I can't see why not use it for utility as well as a TD.

Getting started

Postby Nortz » Sun Sep 09, 2007 7:16 am

I don't think I will have a problem with the tongue. There is a strut with a brace much like a shroud and spreader fo a sailboat. Since the space between the wheel fenders is only about 46 inches, I plan to raise the bed so the sheet of ply will extend slightly oner the fenders. My first thought was to set 2X8s on edge. The dimensions are perfect. I was wondering if it would create to much weight. Any sugestions for alternatives to raise the platform about 7.5 inches?
