Lurker to Newbie

I guess I have lurked long enough and have finally become a newbie. I have also decided to try my hand at building one to drag behind my bike. I am good with cutting everything out just not so good at putting it all together. So, I will need lots of advice...and please, feel free to laugh at any time.

I was an instructor at a private college and now have way to much time on my hands, hopefully this will keep those hands busy. My son thinks this is too much for his mom but my daughter believes her mom can do anything I set my mind to....it should be interesting.

Chubble, welcome to the board. As an experimental, kinda design-it-yourself, I-think-I-can-do-it builder, I encourage you to follow your dream and build that teardrop right away. There is a lot of info here on the forum and all you have to do is ask. Remember, once you slap a floor, walls and roof on your project, you have already built a tear, now all you have to do is finish it. Come on, Lady Builders, a little word of encouragement here...........Many others have done it, Chubble, and you can too.

welcome !!! and don't be intimidated! I say I built my own, but I sure got a lot of good help from a friend and an ex boyfriend. Mine's not a masterpiece and I'm no craftswoman but I have camped in it 4 times in less than a year, and have three or four trips planned this fall/winter. Mine is called the Jewel Box because of my log on/email name but it's still a diamond in the rough. But I love it !!!

Building one of these has been a very educational experience and I am pretty proud of myself . Just had to get help with the wiring and some tools and an extra hand once in a while.

If you have a dream, you can do it. Just get in and read, ask questions and have fun. We have a great many women builders on this forum and you should take the time to see what they have accomplished.

to the playground CH. There is always someone there to tell you what you can't do. You are however free to not listen.

I built most of our really big TD and if I had made it normal sized I could have done it alone. I don't have wood working experience, just some home repair stuff and a book shelf. I did need help with the lifting and My honey bought me a new drill. He also never said "you are out of your mind." Something I wondered several times.

Take is at your own speed and learning curves are part of it.

Enjoy and post lots of Keeps the bubble oil level, doncha know!

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome. I heard a rumor (from my son) that a salvage yard near me has tore down camper frames. I will be visiting there tomorrow. I have an idea of what I want, getting there may be a problem but I do enjoy puzzles! I figured out the picnic table from one sheet of plywood so I might have a fighting chance with this. I sometimes forget to use my camera so you might have to nag a bit! I believe I will like it here!!!

I like your daughter's way of thinking

Our trailer was my project - from planning to building. My husband helped with the heavy lifting, but otherwise I did it all myself. I believe that determination and planning are more important than previous experience (of which I had none in woodworking). You don't need a shop full of fancy woodworking tools, either. I did the vast majority with a jig saw, belt sander, miter saw and drills.

This is a fantastic forum to belong to. I am currently in a build of my own and am the point of making the hatch. I was on my own in the design and building for the most part. Hubby and son helped with some of the heavy lifting. If I build another one I will build the sides with 1x2 like many of ours have done. 3/4 inch 4 x 8 plywood gets pretty heavy for one person.

Read and search the forum - lots of people have the same sort of question(s) as they build. There are even free plans called teh Generic Benroy Plans. Pictures are so helpful too. So don't forget to take pictures because the next newbie that comes along could benefit from you as you have benefited from others. Keep the circle going ya know

And most of all, enjoy!!

Well, I visited the salvage yard....it was huge! No trailer frames . But I did get a 10" x 12" stainless sink and a window for $5. There must have been a 100 tinted glass van windows out there! Will these work? Also found a sunroof, has anyone put one of these in? already I have a hundred questions!

I am anxious to get this started, getting parts and pieces doesn't seem to be a problem right now, but, I have a feeling something will go wrong. lol
