Hello everyone. Working on plans to build a teardrop, owned a 21' Toyhauler for several years and while I loved it, it was simply too much and too big for my typical weekend outings. This website is a wealth of information. I am a welder/fabricator/machinist by trade so building is not new to me having built custom boats, motorcycles, experemental aircraft, etc, just have never built a TT. Needless to say, building the trailer will be my easy part, the woodwork will take more thought and planning :) My primary use will be weekend trips to the desert and mountains to ride offroad motorcycles and occational trips just to get away. My rough plans as they stand now is the Grumman 2 profile at 4.5' wide for a full size mattress, wheels exterior of the body on a torsionflex axel, 2x2 tube frame, minimal galley with just room for coolers and storage bins, walls of 1/2" ply, 3/4" foam insulation, 1/8" oak interior and skinned in aluminum. I am located in Santa Clarita near Magic Mountain.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you know what you want to build, so now all you need to do is make some sawdust and post some pictures of your progress as you go.

See you around.

I was kinda smug about building my teardrop but they have a way of humbling you. You are trying to pack at least part of the comforts of home in 250 cubic feet. ( some folks even less) Everything added means space lost. It is a chess game every piece must fit and be absolutely necessary.
I will give you a real good example I added a barrel bolt to hold up the panty door / countertop in my flip out galley. This door keeps all the canned goods and other supplies contained during transit. I was so proud I now had a positive lock for the pantry and no more run away supplies.

I THOUGHT

Went to close the hatch and the barrel bolt was in the jamb. My hatch wouldn't close because of a $ 1.39 3" barrel bolt GO FIGURE

it's an experiment enjoy it
Growing older but not up !

Welcome to the playground and enjoy. Building with wood is not too different from any other material. Just don't add fire or water. :R Glue works great.

Truthfully if you have a sense of how things go together it will work out great. If not---ask. We have lots of experienced builders and lots of us just got it done without the experience.

Oh and Keep the bubble oil level :pictures: :pictures: :pictures: 8)

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the website for builders of Teardrops and those that are wannabe builders. It sounds like you have MUCHO experience with building custom items and the tools and know how to do it. Look forward to seeing your progress. If you are interested in attending a summer gathering this July in the Northern part of California, click on the link below for IRG 2.0 to find out about this event. Have a great time experimenting with what will work, and just remember, you can't take it ALL with you when you go.
