Another newbie from across the pond!

Hi folks

My name is Scott and have fallen across this fantastic website in my search for details and inspiration regarding teardrop trailers!

I live on an island in the County of Essex, just outside of London, in England. The teardrop caravan (trailer?) idea is not unheard of over hear, but definately not as common as full size caravans.

I have sneaked a few peaks at the forum in the past couple of weeks and found it to be interesting and full of information from, what seems like, a great bunch of people.

Well I suppose I should outline my intentions first.

I drive one of these!

Image

A 1991 Rover Mini!

I attend a few shows with the car and the facts are like this.

The car is (roughly) 10 foot long and 5 foot wide and about 5 foot high! I'm 6 foot 4 inches tall and rather lumpy

When attending shows I find that the weekends camping is spoilt by the fact that the tents I have tried all seem to be a tad small in the sleeping areas (also cold, damp and prone to being let down in the night by jokers :x )

I rather fancy building a smallish teardrop to pull behind the Mini, for two main reasons 1. Their small and neat 2. Far superior over tents and appeal to my (typical) guy nature of just turning up and not having to mess about putting up a tent!

The main problems I am having is trying to find suppliers who can help me with various items, such as decent hinges and other fittings and certainly struggling to find decent plans.

However I shall be undertaking all the work myself and look forward to building the teardrop.

I will however apologise now as I'm sure as the project progresses I'll be asking more and more questions.

And will certainly be on the look out for any other British teardrop owners to chat with and share expertise and problem solving :D

Anyway I have waffled enough, many thanks if you read this far and I hope to speak to some of you soon.

Hi Scott and welcome to the forum. Have a look at the Generic Benroy plans at the top of the page. It gives all the necessary info for building a TD. Also have a look at the design library link, Andrew has supplied heaps of plans that are very useable. There is absolutely no need to go and buy any plans when it's all available right here.

Enjoy your time and your build and don't forget to post heaps of pictures. Miriam needs them ;)

Scott

Welcome!

Good to see another Brit on the way to building. There's a growing number of us. As well as this excellent forum you ought to get over to Tearjerkers too (link at top of the page), we have a dedicated UK chapter over there and there is some useful info if you need any help sourcing bits-n-bobs on this side of the pond.

Good luck with your research and don't forget to post those photos once you begin building.

Best of luck

Image to the playground Scott. I have no doubt you will be wonderfully entertained doing your build. Free plans and they are great even if modified so get to it.

You will need to watch the weight with a small car. We have a few folks who tow with Mini's, the US version. You might check out the Hall of Fame for the smaller builds.

Have fun and thanks for the picture. ;) Good practice for the build.

Welcome Chunky, I joined just over a week ago but have looking at the site for about 6 or 7 months. Just about every question you will ever have is here somewhere and there are a few guys south of the border who no doubt will be only to glad to offer advice as will I. Possibly the yarksher guy is the best to ask as he built his for about a £100 which proves the people from yarksher are more canny than us Scots. You might want take a leaf from his book and start looking at skips in a different light. Once again Welcome to the forum,Evan.

Welcome.

If an Austin A30 or A35 can pull a teardrop, then a Mini will find it easy!

Ayup mate, welcome to the forum. Nice to see another Brit. As es009d7705 says , these teardrops can be built on a budget. Over the weekend my trip to Newark autojumble, proved very fruitfull. I managed to get all the switches, lights, fuse box and sockets i need, plus a few other bits and bobs, taking my build cost so far to £ 118. 75

Well thanks for the warm welcome. :shake hands:

I've been looking at some of the projects and have to say, their all fantastic and filling my head full of ideas!

Mini Renegade, thats a lovely clubby estate. Do you do any Mini shows? I'm hoping to have the trailer ready for the IMM! Will have to wait and see.

Rigsby, I had a look at your project and I must say I'm impressed!

But I think I must have a streak of Yorkshire in me as I have started off well, the trailer was free and delivered for nothing!!

I've had a look in the design library and must say I'm impressed with the choice. Can't quite make my mind up as to which design I want just yet. I'll keep that as a surprise for now

I'll start a project thread as soon as I get some decent pics.

Oh and buy the way, as I go along I'll happily welcome ANY comments, so feel free to chip in, I have a thick skin :) .

Its caused some interest in my Mini club as well. The guys there are watching mainly for three reasons 1) see if its possible/suitable for me to do, 2) to wind me up and 3) see if I can handle the woodwork (I haven't find the right setting on the welder for 'WOOD'  )

But its good to meet you all and hopefully my project will be under way soon.

Check round the wood yards for plywood sheets with damaged corners, as these come cheeper, and you wont need two of the corners if you are doing a teardrop shape. Mini wheels will fit a lot of small trailer hubs. Scrap yards often have old caravans and campers that are a cood source of windows/ fittings etc. And dont forget to ask loads of stupid questions, we all have , cos non of us know everything (exept our lass)

Hi Sott, I live not a huge distance from you sunny Hastings down on the East Sussex coast. As others have already said any questions just ask away. Dont worry about the ribbing you may get from time to time its all good clean fun  Ebay can be a great place to buy bits from but be aware its always worth shopping around. Good luck

Regards, Mark.
