New from NoVA

Postby thistle » Fri Jan 09, 2009 2:46 pm

Hi, new member, currently living in NoVA here, we have no tt yet, have done sporadic tent camping. I also love outdoor cooking (DOs, grilling), would love to get an Airstream if I scored on the lottery, & will be going to an RV expo in Chantilly next weekend, where I 'll get to see an Airstream Flying Cloud, a T@DA, & an r-pod (they're kind of ugly, though). Looks like there's lots of great info on this site, thanks for setting it up...Thistle

Hey thistle,

Welcome to the forum. An RV show is a great place to get started. It's a breeding ground for ideas that you can use in your build. You weren't clear if you were thinking about building or buying... Either way, we have lots of information to help you with your thoughts... ;) :D

Yea, it looks like all my admins are passing me by. It's hard to compete. They are online all day and night, and I am only on in the morning and the evening after work.

Sooooo... I guess that would make you Big Brown in the Belmont Stakes then. You're still Thee Man Mike, and I'm up in the nose bleed section of the cheap seats watching the race with my little couple hundred!

Welcome, Thistle.

Where in NOVA are you?

I live on Capitol Hill and keep my teardrop out near the mountains.

You going to build or buy?

Thanks for the welcome, all! I'm not nearly handy or focused enough to build my own right now, so I'll be searching craigslist for a 2nd hand model. I hope I can get out camping this year, too, but until then, we have a big backyard (that backs to a county park) out in the 'burbs near Mt. Vernon-I can go out there w/ all my outside gear, & squint, & pretend I'm in the real wilderness...

I tried to pretend at Roosevelt Island this morning, but the jetliners from National Airport interrupted the Zen -- about every 30 seconds.

Checking in again on this VERY cold inauguration weekend-I went to the RV expo at the Dulles Expo center today. I just wanted to see the smaller RVs-walk around them, check inside, try to picture myself driving them. I saw the Airstream Flying Cloud 20' (definitely!, if I win the megamillions), the Thor T@DA (very nice), & a R-Pod (not too bad, once I got past the aesthetics-ugly graphics & interior). My only problem is that any of these would be a PERFECT 1 person trailer-now if I could just convince my DH & the kids that they have to sleep out in a tent... :)

I also looked at the Coleman/Fleetwood Evolution 2 & 3-popup trailers, very sleek & minimal looking & very airy, w/ all the screens-almost like sleeping outdoors-(w/ a cassette toilet & shower)...what things do people store on the front platform of these things-bikes, coolers, etc.?

Lots of other folks there, but not too crowded-I also went inside most of the Roadtrek vans. They're great-looking, & I could see myself being able to drive them (do we see a theme here? I drive a Chevy Tahoe, which would work for the smaller trailers, but I've never towed anything before).

Still just dreaming/planning for a trailer in my future, but it was very nice to actually go inside these models (they felt kind of like dollhouses, though, made me wish I was smaller, especially for some of the beds). Although I am glad that I am sleeping inside a heated house tonight...
