New to the group

Postby jjohnston » Thu May 21, 2009 11:55 am

Hi all, I've been a lurker here for a few weeks, trying to soak up all the great info here. I found your group while looking for ideas for a small camping trailer I could drop into a 4X8 utility trailer I have. While the teardrop style is functional, what I have in mind is a "winter trailer" that I could use during hunting season here in Texas as well as camping with my family. I want to be able to stand up and get dressed if it's cold/wet outside. I came up with an idea for two people, but then my daughters (3, yes 3!!!!) said "Where do we get to sleep?" So, I started work on a 5 place with a small dinette. I'll post pics later to show you all my ideas.

JJohnston,
Welcome to the forum. Sounds like yuou got it all under control. Enjoy your build. Heck the planning is as much fun as the build. And the pride of building your own Tear is something else.
Have a great weekend.
 Bill and Marijo
Oh yea I forgot to add I raised 4 daughters and it was a blast. All grown up and married now but they will always be my little girls.
Hope to see you on the road.

JJ, it's not far from our plant in Waxahachie but a long ways from Indiana.

Your always welcome to come to one (or more) of our gatherings.

JJohnston, welcome aboard. Do check out the info available here regarding trailers that are high enough to stand in. I do believe that a rig for 2 adults and 3 kids, would be a tight squeeze for a 4 x 8 trailer. However, stranger things have happened. Check out some of the "slide-in" units that some have built. Good luck, get started soon, take pics, post em, ask questions, and get involved with this bunch of happy campers.

in my drawings I've come up with a box that has a 4X9 footwell, rises about a foot, then out over the sides of the trailer. the front bumps out over the tongue about a foot as well, making the overall length of the camper 10' long. the width is approx. 6' in the front and 4' high. Moving to the back it gradually widens to 92" (7.6') at the rear. the rear hight is 80". my worry is that this thing is too big and heavy for my trailer and I'll need to build one for it. This will make more sense once the drawings are up.
