Newbies in Chilly Washington

Postby CapnRog » Tue Jul 28, 2009 8:14 pm

Greetings from Washington, but it is not chilly now! The temp at the Olympia Airport is 100.7 F. :x My wife, Cynde, and I are planning to build a Tear, or maybe a TTT. We are leaning toward the Kampmaster, as it has a stand up galley, but Steve Cox's Gypsy Caravan is really tempting. (Cynde says: I want to be able to cook up a storm in the trailer!)

I am curious about the tow weight and tongue weight for those two trailers. I am thinking about a fiberglass/epoxy finish for the outside, instead of aluminum, to avoid the radical expansion coefficient differences.

Cheers,
Roger & Cynde LaPrelle

For all you Northern California Teardroppers, can you identify the background in the photo?

Compared to you all, my Washington (D.C.) is chilly.

But it's the humidity, doncha know, not the heat.

Howdy, You just need to head to the hills to adjust that temp. Republic was around 80 this weekend and wonderful between thunder showers. You would be surprised what you can do from the back of a teardrop.

Thanks, everyone, for the warm welcome (no pun intended!). :D

Bill and Marijo, did you use preformed fiberglass panels for the sides or did you glass them yourselves? I was thinking of encapsulating the entire outside of the tear like a boat hull.

Has anyone here built a Kampmaster? We have looked at the drawings, and could probably puzzle it out ourselves, but why? I have searched for a build thread to no avail.

Thanks again,
Roger & Cynde

Are you looking for one of these?

This rig belonged to a member of TOW. Ed and Linda???? I can't remember the last name. They have the only one that I have encountered and they are local.

We were lucky enough to find an ad in the Bargain Sheet a guy who was selling 10' long sheets of Fiberglass. So I bought 3 sheets. One for the floor and of course the sides. Sandwiched it w/ 1/4" plywood.
Bill :applause:
Oh yea I forgot to add the best part $5 bucks a sheet.
Hope to see you on the road.

Hello CapnRog
I did my trailer with 6oz cloth and 4 coats of fiberglass (west systems 105/207) and 4 coats of Captain's varnish 1015 It turned out great. As for longevity only time will tell. I'll let everybody know if and what I have problems with. Good luck with what ever you chose.
