Hey Jerry,

I joined a few weeks ago also! The Alabama chapter of Tearjerkers is having a gathering next weekend over by Birmingham. I'm going to head over and camp with them that weekend so I can see some of their TD's before I start mine and get some ideas. Just wanted to welcome you and say howdy!

Planning is almost as much fun as building and a lot warmer in the winter time.

Thank you for the welcomes! I just priced building a trailer(I have a mig welder) verses buying one from Tractor Supply and the TS one will be a lot cheaper. So I guess that is the rout I will be taking.

First decision made!!

Alot of these folks are good scroungers. You have some time so keep those eyes and ears open. Join Freecycle, check the recycling stations, cutoff bins etc. Before you know it, you'll have enough to start building and you will have hardly spent anything.

Jerry,

You'd be welcome to come to the Alabama gathering this upcoming weekend (Dec 4-6) at Oak Mountain State Park. I've had a good number of folks say they are going to try and make it... some from as far away as Florida & the Carolinas. Bring a tent and camp with us... we should have a good mix of purchased and homebuilts in attendance.

Thank you for the invitation but we have a cabin booked for the end of December and money is really tight! The way the economy is right now it might be a while before I start on a teardrop build.

Welcome from Asheville!

Postby Alfred » Sun Nov 29, 2009 2:10 pm

Hey Jerry,

Welcome from just a little further up the highway in Asheville, NC.

One of the great things about this hobby, in my opinion, is that with the exception of just a few 'big ticket' components (like the $300 I paid for the utility trailer), one can mostly buy a little here and there, without laying out a lot of money in one big chunk. I call it a 'payday' project, meaning I drop a little every other payday or so at Home Depot or Harbor Freight, as it goes along, but usually a little at a time.

Welcome aboard! Keep us posted to your plans and progress!

We ain't exactly cutting a fat hog in the butt but I was able to get Chubby very campable with an investment of less than $900.00. It's not a show piece like many on the board but it is every bit as much fun as a $16,000 commercial wonder.

My point is my build took from Early April to October. I sat down and figured it up it was about $6.00 a day. A brown bag lunch for work instead of eating lunch out will pay for your build if you really want it.

Al is right !!Don't forget Good will and the habitat restores for really really good deals.

AND yard sales OMG what deals can be found I picked up 3 identical gear reduction scissor jacks for a redneck leveling system for $ 1.50 each and a coleman white gas cook top for $ 10.00 . I can not begin to list the hundreds of discount items I have incorporated in my builds.

Porch lights $4.00 each at Habitat. Propane cook top for $6.00 at Goodwill. Shelves and cabinets fireplace mantles and on and on and on.
