Finally a teardrop owner!!!

Postby P'colaTear » Mon Dec 21, 2009 12:20 pm

Just got back last night from a very long one day trip from Pensacola, FL to Gray (Macon area), GA to pick up my teardrop. Saw it on Craigslist last week and had to have it. It is a Hunter Shadow that was built for Eddie Bauer as a promo (what I have been told). It is cute as a button. I have a dark green Eddie Bauer edition Explorer as the tow vehicle - so it makes for a handsome pair. The unit was in good condition prior to the purchase, but unfortunately there has been a lot of heavy rain in the SE and there are wet spaces at the base of both of the side doors and a small spot in the galley. Hopefully these will dry out and be no worse for the wear. It has a ceramic heater and also a small fan inside. The previous owner also purchased a portable "swamp cooler". I am curious to see how it works. The wiring had recently been redone by the prior owner, but unfortunately the lights only work on the left side. Any suggestions for that?

I know that I will have more questions and will appreciate any input from all the veterans on this forum.

Glad to finally be one of you and look forward to meeting those of you in the SE area.

That swamp cooler is not likely to work in Florida humidity. You can try it, but swamp coolers depend on evaporation to cool, and Florida's humidity is going to limit the effectiveness.

+ 1 on pictures. We love pictures here.

Hi P'Cola, welcome to the forum. Right now, those 3 wet spots may not seem much of a problem, but I must caution you, Moisture is an enemy of all teardrop trailers. I suggest that you invest in some sort of weather stripping that will seal the door areas and try to find out where your galley hinge is leaking. There are a number of ways to seal the galley hinge, so keep us informed and perhaps someone can make some suggestions.

Remember, once the water enters an area below the floor, which is often unnoticed, serious damage can occur, and the fix, isn't easy. I don't want to alarm you, just caution you to look further into the problem........Hey, my hatch lid hinge leaks, so the old handy roll of duct tape solves the problem whenever I encounter rain here in So Calif, (which isn't very often!)

Congrats P'Cola on your Tear!! When you get a chance check the grounding wires for that side thats out. I bought mine of CL a couple pf weeks ago and had to rewire it. Had the same problem and found the ground wire on the offending light was in a bad spot and loosened on the road. Mine also has some patches where it got wet inside, I've had it in the garage and they disappeared to a point but I put some wood rot stuff on them to seal and to penetrate the spots. You can get the stuff at most boat supply stores like west marine.

Good luck and Enjoy your tear!

Cliff

Yes, anything east of the mississippi, is not so-good. It will just spit water on you.
