New from MU

Postby MUhunters » Sat Dec 26, 2009 6:16 pm

That is Miz-zou country. Chip and I are newbies, getting ready to build a TTT in March. We have been tent camping for a couple of years on our weekends of deer and turkey hunting. We are looking to move up to a trailer. We generally hunt in areas with no amenities except an out- house. We have been studying the weekender and weekender II models. One big obstacle is getting some kind of twin bed arrangement on our trailer. Currently we are looking over the ideas of bunk beds in the rear and drop down table/ bed combo in the front. Although we hunt, chances are we will use this for family camping too. We are both married with two kids.

As we design and build, we will keep in touch. Any structural opinions on building bunk beds now would be helpful. :D

Hey! Welcome to the T&TTT list! And greetings from the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western NC!

Building is more fun when you are working with someone. My friend David from the T&TTT list comes over and helps me work on mine when pur schedules permit, and it has been a lot of fun, plus I get more done on it when he is working with me.

I am working on a modified Weekender designed to sleep a family of five.

Welcome to the group - A lot of information and good people to be found here. Keep us posted to your build!

Welcome to the forum, guys! First of all, how big of a camper are you wanting to build, size wise? I take it that you need a good sized camper if you want a bunk bed in it? Are you going to be offroading in this rig?

We will probably start with a 4x8 or 5x8 trailer. We are thinking about going to go 6' to 6'6" in height. Bunk height will be based on our ability to sit up w/o crushing our skulls repeatedly. We also want room to roam if we are trapped inside during a rainy weekend, especially when camping with kids. In checking out the Stewart Family's "Weekender II" design we would have a flat wall in the rear for the bunk beds. That cuts us down to a 9 ft length.

As far as camping, I could estimate 2-6 times per year in the future in various campgrounds of different types. I do not foresee any off road camping. In my wife's case I would be required to have running water toilets and showers close by.

One concern is the structure of the walls or extra support required to hold a 200lb man on a bunk bed. Of course we need support posts on the front edges, but what about in the corners at the rear of the trailer?

Thanks for the replies!

Welcome to the forum fellow Miz-zouian. figure you must be down around Columbia with the MU in your handle.

With support of the bunks down into the floor I wouldn't think there would be a problem. You might want to put the supports over the frame rails for maximum strength.

You might look at the Winter Warrior design with bunks in the back on one side and the door off set to the other. That would give you a lower profile, standing room in the back and a dinning/bunk in the front.

5 x 10

Postby MUhunters » Thu Dec 31, 2009 11:18 am

We think we have decided on a 5x10 trailer. We feel length is the most inportant for what we may want to do.

We are checking out a trailer builder, craigslist. Does anyone else know of a place to find a 5x10 at a reasonable price.
