Hi! Do I have what it takes?

Postby Lola » Tue Jan 05, 2010 6:02 pm

Howdy! I am a newbie. Really new and uninitiated. :)

This website gives me severe trailer envy. But I don't know if I'm ready. The spouse and I are considering a (don't hate me) tent trailer. They don't really appeal to me much, but we do have two little kids. Our car won't hold enough junk for a camping trip, so we'll have to tow something. To go to a hotel at a beach less than 2 hours away I needed a hitch-mounted cargo carrier to hold our junk. For one weekend!

So, anyway. How reasonable is it to want a teardrop that will sleep 4? (And carry junk for 4--wait a minute! Where would we put the junk when we were sleeping? The car?)

I know I would prefer towing and storing and setting up a little trailer more than a popup, and they certainly have more pizazz, but 4 sleepers? Do they make them that big? I know smallness is a big part of the appeal, but I can't leave the little ones at home! And as long as it's smaller than a tent trailer, I'll still be ahead.

Can I find such a teardrop? I don't trust myself to make my own from scratch although I'd enjoy doing the interior work myself--just nothing that would get me killed on the road! Keeping the weight down would be nice, but I expect to go a little higher than many here since I want to sleep 4. But I could still beat a tent trailer, right?

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Are the kids old enough and is the car big enough for them to sleep in the car? A tent?

Nope, nope, and a TENT???

Nah. They're almost 2 and almost 5. The back seat of the car is solid carseats. Since they are small, though, they probably can squish in a smaller space than a regular human, and then when they don't fit anymore, could be booted to a tent.

Of course, if I'm going through the effort of setting up a tent, we probably all would get in it. I don't mind tents all that much. Maybe I just need a chuckwagon?

I have seen a number of designs that include bunks crosswise in the front of a tear. There are a couple available commercially, including a coming Mega-Mini. By the time they out grow they should be in their own tent anyway

Nothing wrong with a tent trailer

Postby jandmz » Tue Jan 05, 2010 7:33 pm

There's nothing wrong with a tent trailer. I have two of them.

You don't say what your tow vehicle is, but if it is a small car, you will be extremely limited as to what you can safely tow.

Tent trailers have their place, and with a growing family of four, you may find that a more practical solution. If you want to go with a light weight hard side trailer, you may want to look at something like a 13 ft. Scamp. It is a fiberglass camper that could possibly handle your family.

Lola-

If the 4 of you can fit into a King sized bed, a 6' wide would work.

Also a 13' Serro Scotty Sportsman would be a sweet set-up for four & they weigh in at 995lbs.

There are options!

Cheers,

I can understand why you don't think your girls are not ready to sleep on their own yet now that I know their ages. Not sure why you find a tent so surprising in itself. I'm moving away from tents not so much because they're so much effort to set up (they're not) but simply because a mattress is more comfortable and we often camp without the kids, so we don't want a bigger setup. We had the popup when we had 5 kids living at home and do not miss it...although the couple we gave it to are loving it with their 3 kids that mama doesn't want out of her sight. My kids sleep in tents now, or the back of the truck...actually, in jungle hammocks since that is what we tend to use - see http://www.hennesseyhammock.com .

You might also try leaning the front car seats back and using them as beds for the girls once they're old enough for you to feel comfortable with them not in the camper...but I'd still chock the wheels just to make sure. If the child seats are in the way, they might be placed in the trunk or the galley of the TD or even the roof of the car if you have a piece of plastic to put over them .

Check out the VW hammocks that came in the campers...they attached crossways to brackets on the walls. Seems something like that might work until they got big enough to sleep in a tent of their own and could be removed when not needed. You might even be able to do something similar inside the car with ropes or ratchet/canoe straps. Of course, as suggested, you could always custom-design your TD...maybe give up something now for space for the girls (bottom kitchen cabinets perhaps) then add that back in once they move out into a tent. I know I plan to make my cabinets removable (not for that reason) but you might consider that, then move what you need to out to make their bed crosswise. See the thread on slide-outs to see what I mean. I might have to do something like this myself when the grandkids start camping with us...once we have grandkids that is

The Scamp isn't such a bad camper either if your car can pull it (it's a bit heavier than a teardrop); I was looking at getting one of those when I found teardrops and dropped the idea of a scamp like a hot potato. The idea of a real mattress and not trying to squeeze inside or sit at a dollhouse-sized table just appealed to me...plus the fact that my wife's planned new car still can't pull it but it can pull a TD.

Nah. They're almost 2 and almost 5. The back seat of the car is solid carseats. Since they are small, though, they probably can squish in a smaller space than a regular human, and then when they don't fit anymore, could be booted to a tent.

took a g'son camping. set up a small tent right next to the t/d and put a dog in with him.. he was fine.

And, only needing a tent for sleeping two little ones still keeps the set up down to a minimum, since the adults sleep in the t/d. You don't need space in the tent for 4 people and all the junk... the junk is in the galley, the tow vehicle, etc....

depends on weather, etc., of course... but a small wet tent is far easier to deal with than a humongous big one.

I'm surprised Alfred hasn't chimed in yet. He's building a weekender with room for himself, his wife, and his three kids:

http://tnttt.com/viewto ... &start=180

If the above doesn't work, right now, it's on the second page of the Build Journals, called Weekender for 5. (His trailer is put to bed for the winter; so, probably no more major progress until spring.)

I think the only real issue with allowing kids to sleep outside the TD is when they are still apt to get up in the middle of the night and wonder off. I'm not too terribly concerned about wild animals or crazed criminals coming to steal my kids in the middle of a campground or forest.

A tent room might work really well for this....size it appropriately for 2 sleeping bags, and peg the bottoms down tight or better yet, make it with a floor. I have one in my design Image

On mine, it simply hangs from PVC pipes that store inside the roof rack...which can also be PVC if you don't plan to carry anything too heavy. While mine is designed for bathroom/changing, there's no reason it couldn't be modified for sleeping...add a floor and a camper-side wall to keep little ones from crawling away except through the camper itself and put a small tarp over the top in case it rains. They could even share your heat/AC.

Nice thing with this is when they get older and graduate to either a tent or a college dorm, you still have your cute small TD.

You might want to take a look at this idea, too:

That's cool. That looks about like a VW Camper hammock.

Build a 2+2, the 5' high version, in Andrew's Design Library, up there in the menu.
