Hi guys, I'm new here. I have a VW Bug, '66 to be exact. Here he is....

I drive it everyday and when my wife and I go to shows we usually are in a tent. This little car will hold a good bit but since the stance is lower it does scrap at times. I need a small trailer to haul my gear so why not kill two birds with one stone?

I plan on something like this only lighter... Loose the ragtop and most of the windows.



I'm hoping to use a wood frame with fiberglass over that insulated and then finished on the inside. Use the rear door as the galley and room enough for a queen air mattress inside. I can get dimensions from some of my club buddy's that own split buses.

I think it will be cool!

Wow! That's cool! First car I ever owned (in the 1980's) was a 1973 bug, which I bought from a guy at our church for $500, this one got rear-ended, so I bought a 1970 bug from a used dealer for $600. Wish I had them now!

Welcome to the forum!!! I'm in Blue Ridge, GA a native of Carrollton.

Love the Bug. Bought my first one in 1968 new. Wife rolled it and I bought a 1970 bug. By 1996 when I gave it to my BIL it was a 1968, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, If you know what I mean. Kept one engine in it and a rebuilt one on the carport. That dude in - I'm guessing - over half a million miles left me stranded only once - dropped a valve in #3.
Broke the accelerator cable on one occasion. Tied a string to the carb pulled it out the deck vent around the car into the window and proceeded home Yep, wish I still had it.

Geron - had the same thing happen to me. Went halfway across Jacksonville with the accelerator propped open, double clutching, but made it home - at 4 a.m.

Yep, I guess we all had a bug at one time or another. It almost always got you there if you could tinker a little. College break in the late sixties: drove my '63 all the way from Atlanta to home in Orlando with a broken clutch cable. Warm up engine in neutral. Stop engine. Engage first. Start engine/car.....carry on with careful shifts. Just plan ahead with the uphill stoplights.....

If we were just talking I think I'd say look at something very light and with low wind resistance. If y'all are just going to tow the trailer 30 miles, no biggie. But if you will be pulling it any distance there might be some limitations with the bug. Horsepower is one item, unless you've already taken care of that.


The rear weight bias and swing axles might also make life interesting towing a trailer....maybe lighter the better. Looking at your sharp bug I'm sure you know this stuff, but just keep it in mind.

I've had this car on the road for the last 14 months and only twice have I broken down, clutch cable one and clogged fuel regulator. It's not linger on the car. I got to work went to the VW shop got a cable and installed it at lunch. It was a cheap O cable that broke. Last Nov. about twenty of us drove down to Bradenton, Clearwater and Dadecity for Bug Jam. We pulled into a rest stop and about one minute later about 25 Porsche 911's pulled in. It was a parking lot of German steel!

RPM750, welcome to the forum. Now that looks like an original V-Dub, camping unit. I really like it. How do you go about creating such a neat little VW custom rig? What a great idea. It looks like you can start with a blank slate, and design what ever you like to suit your needs. Good for you, keeping with the original VW thinking, and what could be better than pulling such a unique camping unit behind that cherry looking VW?

I am looking forward to seeing your progress pics, showing how it is all put together and actually ending up as a one-of-a-kind, original rig, which seems ideal for what you intend to use it for. Good luck on your efforts to attain your dream. and when you make your maiden voyage, swing on by my So Calif, all-weather, sheltered, full-hook up, friendly camping space, that always has the coffee pot on, and is a place to re-group and make plans for additional exploration of the mountains, deserts and seashores, which we are so known for.
