Thinking about a Teardrop build

Postby Rocinron » Sat Feb 20, 2010 7:38 pm

Hello all,
My wife and I love to camp, but tents are not always the best, especially here in Michigan.I have seen programs about teardrops, and priced out commercial and custom ones, and the sticker is too high for me.
I have been storing for a friend a folding utility trailer (4x8) foot, for some ten years now, and could easily acquire it or similar for a chassis.
I hope to learn some tips and tricks for a future build, and especially best materials to keep the total package down around 1000 lbs.
We have a 2005 Malibu Maxx that we just love for it's flexibility, especially for camping, and superb gas mileage, so the teardrop seems the way to go.
I hope to get a clearer picture of what may lie ahead for a build.

You've come to the right place... and with your Malibu Maxx, the teardrop is the way to go...

Hang around for a while, you'll find the perfect design to build.

Where in MI are you from? I'm in Lake Orion.

Mike...
The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten, so build your teardrop with the best materials...

Hi and welcome!

When I first started lurking around this forum, I thought building a teardrop was way too intimidating for me. But with a lot of research and asking questions on this forum, I've decided to give it a go.

You'll also get lots of ideas for the planning process.

Good luck!

Mike,
I live in Clinton Township, I pass through Lake Orion a few times a year.
I used to camp in the Oxford area.
I liked the TD design the first time I saw it, and like the idea of compact design and functionality that can be had.
We have all the camping gear that would be needed for a week long stay at a primitive site,so the transition to a teardrop would be fun, and seamless.
Right now I am looking for a hitch for the Maxx.
The trailer will be next, and hopefully a build can begin this year.
I am all ready gathering info. at the usual obsessive rate that drives my wife nuts, but she will be happy once things materialize.

Ron

Welcome aboard from another Michigander, Milan to be exact, hope to share a campfire some day. ;)
Where are we going and why am I in this hand basket?

Thanks for the welcome Tony.
This site is pretty cool, I just saw the heading for vintage camping gear, and I can't wait to check it all out.
