Hello from Jayhawk country

Postby wagondude » Sun Jan 16, 2011 7:59 pm

Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Bill. I have been lurking for several years. I would love to build a TD, But SWMBO has a few requirements for camping that have me leaning toward something more like the Compact. It will probably be some time before I start building, if I ever start. I can get by on very little, but she has other ideas of what a quality vacation is. My dream is to spend a year on the road and camp a week in each state (and some in Canada on my way to Alaska). I have found this site quite informative and I know if I start my build that I will get lots of help from those in the know. I have looked at several builds and have been amazed at the workmanship. Keep up the good work and keep the cool designs coming.

Lawrence. We can see a hill or two, but have to drive a few hours to see any mountains.

Welcome, Bill.

I too found the Compact's layout intriguing. You'll find several variations on the Compact here in the Forum. Sharon and I are both building Compact-inspired designs right now, for example. Hope you can add your ideas to the mix real soon.

Mike, I checked out your build pics. I see you are reversing the pop top and going with a side entrance. It also looks like you are reversing the interior layout. Do you have any drawings of the interior plan?

Yes. There is some discussion of the design in my first thread at http://tnttt.com/viewto ... highlight=

Also, there is more at http://tnttt.com/viewto ... highlight=

Wow, Bill, what an ambitious camping plan. I traveled for about 8 years in our motorhome, throughout 46 of the 48 states, and even though the sweet wife and I got along just fine, (after 56 years of marriage), I can't imagine her going along with doing it, in such a small camping trailer. Being a devoted teardrop owner and user, I would have no problem spending months traveling in it, alone, since I lost my partner almost 2 years ago, but trying to imagine two of us spending days, weeks and months in such a small unit, well that could have been a problem.

All I can say, is good luck on your proposed build and trip, enjoy all of the sights that America has to offer, and when in So Calif, swing on by and we'll swap lies, regarding trailer living. Traveling the US is quite an experience, and I absolutely love it. Enjoy your build, your planned extended adventure and be sure to keep us in touch, (plus posting many pics) regarding your experiences and enjoyment of many of the sights available to those of us who leave the comforts of home and enjoy burning up the highways, looking for sights and interesting folks along the way. Long live travel trailer enthusiasts!
8) :? ;) Roly, just an old Woody builder and user & loving it.

I probably won't get close to that with the wife. There would have to be regular stops at hotels to keep her happy. That and the fact that she would want to return home would mean that I would probably have to go it alone. Then maybe fly her out to some of the places that she has more interest in.

Thanks for the links, Mike. I'll be watching your build.

Welcome from the Rayvillians! As Darren mentioned, check out the North Central and South Central for camping outings. We will be close to you at Redmond this spring and Crawford in September. We always welcome new comers in our area. Trudy and Gary

Thanks all, I'll check it out. The wife and I are still trying to decide if we have the ability to take a vacation this year. If my son can keep his grades up, we promised him a trip to the Great Wolf Lodge in KC. I have a feeling that will put us down for the count if he does his job. Might be able to get a quick weekend in though.

We all share the cost of the group campground in Crawford (September) .. and usually end up paying about $10.00 a trailer for the weekend. We have lots of pot lucks .... so there is always plenty of food. Bring the son ... he will love it :) You dont have to make reservations. Darren takes care of getting the group camping ground and we pay him when we get there. Bring a tent and tent camp if no trailer .... or drive down for the day and have a great day of talking trailers and companionship! Trudy

Thanks Trudy. Our son does like camping (just got back from a Boyscout klondike derby today). I'll see how our schedule works out and let you know If we decide to drop by or pitch a tent.

As an aside, I finally found Sharon's build thread. I thought I would post a direct link for those that are interested (and so I can find it again).http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=27313

If you're a true Jayhawk then you saw KU scrimmage with St. Mary's School of the Blind last Saturday? Pullen, puh-lease!

Welcome. As Trudy mentioned, there'll be a bunch of folks just down the road from you at John Redmond Reservoir in June. Come down for the day if you can't stay the night, or you can pitch a tent in our spot if you want. Don't worry about a reservation, if you want to show up with a tent, we'll make space for ya. The wives can visit and maybe yours will see just how much fun this can be. Or we'll scare her off for good. Either way.
