I'll try to summarize:
We passed a teardrop on the road, and my wife loved it. I told her I knew where one sat in an old junkyard about 7-10 years ago, but said it probably wasn' t still there. We drove by and it still sat there.
Bought it and pulled it home. Other than trailer lights, no issues pulling it the 6 miles home. After doing some research, it's a Tourette, 1946 ish, but it has the tailights off of a 1939 Ford? The lug nuts turn opposite. ( I had an old willys military jeep once that the lugs were the same?)
The thing is very original, floor is even in good enough shape to use now as is. The only thing "wrong" with it is that the water cooler is full of rust, but since I'm pulling it with a Ford ranger I'm looking for ways to lighten and that was simple. After rigging up some trailer lights and getting a spare tire and safety chain, it was ready for a camping trip.
The plan is to use it as-is for the rest of the summer and get some enjoyment from it and take notes of ways to upgrade it. The only wood used in this was the floor. I plan on taking it off of the frame over the winter to better inspect the frame, have the frame sandblasted, powdercoated/painted , and add a new floor. I have young kids and it has a bunk over the foot area. By the headboard area, it has a sliding door for storage. I think I'll take that out and turn that into a small bunk area as well since all 3 kids fought over the one bunk anyway.
Would like more info on Tourette Tourers if anyone has them and also any good bunk ideas.
I'll try and post some pics as I figure it out.
Thanks for reading.
