Greetings from the nation - I mean, state of Texas

Postby Skulleigh » Wed Aug 31, 2011 9:37 pm

Hello everyone, my name is Skulleigh, or just Leigh in "real life", and I live in the Dallas-Ft Worth area.

I do not currently own a teardrop or other trailer, but I have a mighty case of the wants! We never even had one growing up, but I was always fascinated by the idea of a self-contained home on wheels, and poked through ones owned by friends whenever I could.

I do have some experience camping. A few years ago, my family (at the time my parents and I) lived in a tent for a month and then a shed for two more months while we waited for a mobile home to be delivered to our land in Oklahoma. I might have brain damage - I actually enjoyed waiting for them to go to town so I could take a bath in a big Rubbermaid tub! Of course, I had to listen for cars coming around the circle, just in case!

Most recently my camping has been at large gatherings where everything has to be hauled in - though the campgrounds do have a shower house and portapotties set up. I camp in a tent that's technically a 3 person tent, but you'd have to really like the other two people. My friends call it the Hobbit Hole, and apparently talk to other people about my setup - we are camping elsewhere this year with a new group and when I emailed the coordinator to let her know what kind of space I'd need I was told my tent is "legendary" I don't think it's very extreme at all, but apparently other people like to do this thing called "standing up" in their tents, hehe. I set up a twin air mattress in there, so we aren't talking terrible deprivation. I think my friends are just a bit wussy. :D

Anyway, teardrops caught my eye because they remind me of my "Hobbit Hole" - small, and easy to set up for a average-sized woman by herself. I am married, but my husband is allergic to - let's just say "outdoors" so while I always try to get him to go camping with me, he has backed out every time.

I also love the pictures of vardo-esque tiny travel trailers I've seen that are all self-contained and decorated up. Not to mention, come the robot/zombie wars, it might come in handy to flee and live in one hidden away in the safety of the hills! And maybe with the ability to stand up and have AC, hubbylove might actually come with me. Maybe.

I have a bathroom remodel to pay off as quickly as I can, and then I'm going to start saving for some sort of Hobbit Hole on wheels. In the meantime, I will research and plot and maybe even make a foam core board 1/6th model to see what I want!

Anyway, sorry to ramble on, thanks for reading!

Hey. I'm new also from the great state of Texas. The Dallas/FtWorth area. I don't have a TD yet either and am planning and scheming like crazy. It will probably be about a year before I can do anything positive about my TD.
The South Central group is having a gathering the weekend of Sept 9 - 11 at Joe Poole Lake, Loyd Park area. I'm going to look and dream and drool.

Greetings from the cooler central area of the state! Good luck in your search and as you read on here more will find more great ideas than you could ever possibly use, but that's the best part of these forums along with some very good advice.

Greetings from a little farther south to all of yall! I understand about the lusting for a teardrop, it happened to me. We are waiting for the finishing touches on our new teardrop from a builder near you in Keller. Can't wait. You never know your husband might get the bug if he goes to see some. Good luck.
Sandy

Welcome Leigh,

You've come to a great place, the teardrop lust around here is infectious and great ideas and advice abound. You may think you have things to do "before you can start" but you won't be able to resist for too long.

If you build it he will come(hubby that is). My hubby was skeptical at first too, but he's come around.

Welcome Skulleigh,

It's good to have another Texan and DFW'er onboard! Like some of the other posters said, 1). once your TD is built, your husband will follow, and 2). stop by at Loyd Park next weekend to see some builds and meet folks.

If you can't make Loyd Park, try to swing by the LCG VI gathering in October. There's some campsites available, so why don't you do like we did last year and tent camp? Details about LCG can be found in the South Central section of this forum.

Take care,
Tom

Just a quick note to say thanks for the warm welcome! I am having a bit of an eye problem at the moment, so I will jump back in more when my right eye isn't swollen shut  with an eye infection, yuck!

Welcome to both of you.

Like aggie79 said come by Loyd Park on Joe Pool Lake next weekend and meet some folks & look at some TD's up close. We'll have around 17 TD's there.
