Newby from South Africa

Postby Breytie » Thu Sep 08, 2011 2:10 pm

My name is Andre and I am a 48yo male from Pretoria, South Africa. I happened on this group when searching for a solution to a completely unrelated problem.

Turns out I found the solution to an ever longer standing problem. I love camping and fishing and the barest minimum was OK by me. The wife, well she wanted a decent bed to sleep in and more than thin pieces of canvass protecting her at night. I only knew of standies as the "other" option but do not have a TV big enough to tow it nor the money for one.

Great was my joy when she OKed to idea of a TTTT! So I started reading as much as I could about the subject. Now I am totally confused and disconbobulated :? with all the options, ideas and possibilities. Being from the decimal part of the globe where the seasons are swapped around does not help much either!

I have training and experience in working with wood, steel, alu, copper, plumbing, locks, keys, gas but LPG not propane, electricity, electronics, lighting, computers, diesel and petrol engines and generators, a wide range of adhesives and paints and a smattering of other things. Working at a hardware store does not hurt either! That certainly opens avenues to acquiring perfectly good shop soiled, "expired", demo, half used, end-of-line or even sponsored products. To bad we don't do trailers or plywood!

This is a warning that I will be asking many questions while deciding "what is enough" in the various aspects of TTTT design an building. At the same time I will help where I can with the info I have available.

Let there be many teardrops of joy out there!

Hi Andre,

Welcome to the forum! Whatever questions you have, go ahead and ask away...there are many, many very knowledgeable people here and they're the nicest bunch of people. So, good luck on your build and of course, just remember, we like lots of pictures 8)

Sounds like a great start (wifely approval) and basic knowledge, We ask and answer lots of questions and know absolutely that ignorance is curable.

Hi Breytie/Andre,

Welcome to this great forum, full of info and friendliness.

There are a wide variety of approaches taken here, and the usual way it's
done is to assess your needs and "emulate" all the various solutions
you discover here that appeal to you and your needs [in addition to your
own] and then incorporate them into your build if possible and as you
can..

One of my favorite sources of information/inspiration is to look at
some of the Australian and South African Off Road caravan and camper
manufacturer's web sites. They are PRICEY to buy, but their ideas and
solutions to camping problems/needs are often quite ingenious. Especially
their slideout/outdoor kitchens. There is no reason you can't "emulate"
any of their ideas that can be of use to you in your own private build.

Here is a partial list of some I've come across - in no particular order:

Three sizes offered:

More heavy duty it seems:

This has an imaginitive inside bath version:

This is a molded fiberglass bodied version:

Absolutely amazing:

More caravanesque:

This is a thread off of the Australian Vintage Caravan Forum on the Expandavan,
a very interesting small caravan [5-5ft6in W x 9ft-10ft6in L body or
1.524M-1.6764M W x 2.743M-3.2004M L] that has two fold-out beds,
one on each side. It's from the late 1960s-mid1970s in three
iterations - plywood, fiberglass and regular construction methods. [Note: the
'Fugly' caravan briefly shown is not an Expandavan but a one-of-a-kind build.] I
would love to "emulate" one of these in a build someday; small travel size
with roomy accomodations without excess space:

TD or TTT - It just depends on your needs + reasonable wants and the tow-vehicle's
capacity.

Happy planning and building.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo
