Mississippi Newbie

Postby MarineSTC » Mon Dec 19, 2011 6:41 am

Just wanted to drop in a introduce myself. Name is Tommy, I from the Meridian area of MS. Been kicking around the idea of building a TD or TTT for the last couple of months. Been in a bind this year during hunting season considering the little cabin I stayed in while at my hunting club is now occupied by a collage student. Not much point in building another building or trying to rent something close since I am generally the only one that goes up there. Got to looking around at getting another camper since my current one is being occupied by a friend that is struggling his way through a bad divorce. I ended up coming across a little guy and thought that would work perfect.
I also normally try to get away and do some out of State hunting as well and unlike others I would much rather drive the trips and see the country than fly. Last one I went on was to Montana and that was an awesome trip. Plus during the spring and summer I do a little traveling to participate in Archery compititions, and once again a TD would be a winner for a weekend shoot.
With that said I am sure you get the picture at where I am at in my TD/TTT persuit. I am sure ya'll won't hear much out of me for a while yet, I got a lot of reading and lurking to do before I attempt to get started. Then I am sure the questions will start flowing.

Welcome from a Mississippi native, who now lives as a Hoosier. I grew up in Columbus and passed through Meridian very frequently. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum. There's lots of great info and fun people here who are willing to share information and ideas and encourage you as you go.

Check out the free plans for the Generic Benroy. I found them to be an excellent starting place and you can adapt them to any profile you want to build.

Most of all have fun, and when you get started be sure to start a build journal. Post lots of pictures because we all really enjoy sharing in each other's progress.

Merry Christmas!

Since you expect to travel some distance to hunt, you may want to consider the weather over a trip that lasts a few days.

With a TD, cooking is an outdoor experience. With a TTT, cooking can be indoors when the weather doesn't cooperate. Also, many folks with TDs also carry tents or tarps for shelter for the cooking area and for dressing rooms. This is okay when you are in a place for a couple of days, but I would think it is an extra burden when traveling about.

There are lots of factors to consider. I found it helpful to imagine a few scenarios and then to think how each design would handle the situations. In the end, I opted for a TTT with lots more volume and not much more weight or expense.

Enjoy the journey!!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. Hope everyone is ready for a good holiday season.
Thanks for all the advise. I have about settled on the idea of doing a TTT. I'm not bad doing carpentry work but that bending wood thing just never did agree with me, at least never on the first attempt. So I figure for the first one I will stick to the Kiss method and stay with in my comfort zone.

Marine, I am in Birmingham area not too far from meridian. Come and camp at one of the gatherings soon and you can see firstbhand some of the interesting units out there. Al and ga had a joint gathering last fall. Just bring a tent and hang out!
