Hey there...

I'm Bill Reedy, tuning in from (mostly) sunny Citrus Heights, CA. I've been sifting through the forums for several weeks now... great stuff, by the way! There are some really fine builds in here from some real craftsmen and craftswomen! I think I've read enough to get my own trailer in the works now.

I have a snowbear trailer , 54"x96" (almost), that I'm using for general cargo and for toting all our camping stuff when we go out. My vision is to build a tear that will give us something to camp in, and by sliding out the rear galley, allow me to load in some big stuff when I need to. I've pretty much decided on Generic Benroy layout, however I want to go 5x10, so I have some stretching to do on my trailer. Since the tongue adjusts 2' forward I can add a 2' extension to the front to get my length. As for the width, I will either have to build over the wheels or replace the axle with one about 6" wider. Haven't decided yet which will be the better way to go. Any insight is appreciated!

I'm looking for a good 5x10 benroy layout that I can tweak. Until then I'm scratching on paper. I'm planning on a height of at least 54". Meanwhile, I'll keep looking through the design section.

Welcome Billy,
You can widen your axle the amount you need. I done a couple width changes with any problems. Just make you or who ever does the work makes really good welds, meaning proper weld penitration. On the axle I did that was made with pretty thin wall tubing for axle application, ( it was a commercial built trailer) I used an internal tube splice.

I didn't really think about splicing the axle, didn't know that was an option. I was just thinking about replacing the whole thing, but that does give me another option. I don't have any welding equipment, but I know a guy down the street that does welding jobs from his garage. Looks like my axle is made with 1/4" c-channel about 1.5" x 1.75". How much overlap do you think I'd need?

The axle is made out of channel iron and not round or square tube? I've never come across and axle with a main beam of channel iron. It can still spliced with a butt joint and laped with reinforcing plates.

Since you're in Citrus Heights...you need to know that there is going to be a major tear gathering up at Lake Shasta, May 3-6. It's the earliest large gathering for Nor. Cal. Tenters are welcomed and there are probably going to be close to 75-80 trailers to check out for ideas and people to meet. Grant Whipp is the organizer and he has a great selection of parts for the tear builder. That gathering is a great one to attend, and, it's not too far from home. Hope to see you there! Doug

I ordered a "Rubber Ride" axle directly fom "Dexter" for my project.
It was Cheap, fast delivery and to my exact specs. Highly recomend this way to go.
