Hello to everyone. My name is Jason and I seem to have a few issues. Firstly trying to navigate around the site on an iPhone so as to know how to post. Hopefully I have done it correctly and not made a mess of it.

I am from Melbourne, and ever since I was a little boy and saw my first teardrop camper I've wanted to make one. Now I'm a lot older and have made up my mind that I'm going to do it. I've looked on the net and found the style I would like to make but am unsure of what style it is and where if anywhere I can find plans. Can anyone put me in the right direction? Thank you once again for allowing me to join your community.

Should have been " love to build". Grrr auto correct. Or could be big thumbs on iPhone. Probably the later.

That shape is close to a Grumman 2 ...

For plans and design ideas go to the design resources at the top of the page. There are several links there including the Design Library and the Generic Benroy Plans. Everyone who intends to build their own should take a look at the information in these links. The design library will give you an idea of the common shapes and the generic benroy plans are a free, start to finish set of instructions for building your own. Along with the accumulated knowledge of the people on this forum, anything is possible.

Welcome and best wishes...
Corwin

Welcome to the forum. You came to the right place. But, I have never used a plan. I draw out a full size profile on a piece of cheap 1/4" plywood or masonite. Then I cut the pattern to the lines I drew in. Stand it up, back up and look at it. Make any adjustments I need, and then draw in where the mattress goes and fill in the galley and inside cabinets. Put in where the fender will be and the door. Then I work off what becomes a full size blue print. Hope that made sense. Others who used a plan will join in.

I worked out the profile and basic placement of things the same as Steve (Woodbutcher), on a $10 peice of luan floor underlayment. The rest has been on the "by the seat of my pants plan."

The design resources at the top of the site is a great place to check out all the profiles.

And welcome to the forum.

Hi and welcome to the forum! You have come to the right place if you want to build a teardrop.

I have to chime in here in order to balance out the discussion and give a different perspective. I am an engineer by trade, and unlike the others I meticulously designed everything for 3 months in SketchUp (awesome free program by the way) before I ever touched a piece of wood. Back when I began the project I lacked the carpentry skills and a lot of the technical know-how to simply jump in and start building. Planning allowed me to perfect my design, and to make many mistakes in the computer model and not in wood where I could easily fix them beforehand. Many here do have the skills and vision to accomplish such beautiful work with far less planning. I find that people fit into one of these two groups.

As far as plans, Steve Frederick has a great set of plans from what I hear. His website has a bunch of good technical info as well. He is a regular contributing member of this forum. Besides that and the generic benroy plans I would tell you to read and reread and read again the Build Journal message board on this forum. There are hundreds of builds, many with an amazing level of detail which can show you the right path. My design has dozens of ideas borrowed from many of the builds here.

Cheers!
Ryan

Jason,

Yes there are Teardrop owners in Victoria.
There is a Yahoo Aussie Teardrop Camper group who have heaps of info. I am a member and found the site very useful during our build.
The site has a good gallery of Aussie builds which is of some help.
Take it easy.

Lets do a three sixty and get out of here !
