Newbie from Florida

Postby skypirate » Sun May 26, 2013 11:46 am

Hi All,

I've been lurking for some time now, reading posts and learning what works (and what doesn't). It's finally time to start. Today I pulled the trigger on a 5X8 from Northern Tool. For $359.00 I couldn't build it that cheaply. I will have to do quite a bit to it but it seemed a good place to start.

My first question is... what do ya'll think of using pressure treated for the sills and sub floor? I've read all sorts of threads about undercoating and sealing but very little on pressure treated lumber and plywood. I had to wonder if there is a reason for that.

I'm planing a profile similar to Sawtooth II. with center opening swingout doors for the lower part of the galley. I may start a build thread.

I look forward to any input

Congrats! What I had read in the past in here is to stay away from (or at least minimize) pressure treated. The reasoning was that the off gassing in such a small space would be..well...unpleasant.

You are in Florida. Find some marine plywood.

Yeah, I understand the concerns about arsenic in the treated lumber but I think I may use it just for the sills and sub floor. Neither of which are exposed to the inside. I think that should be safe enough, air quality wise, and will protect the underside from the weather. Anyway I'm old, so if the arsenic kills me we'll just call it natural causes.

I used treated plywood for the subfloor and I covered the floor with vinyl floor covering. I don't see off gassing as a problem with a vapor proof floor covering. :?

Most pt wood now is a new compound. It did contain arsenic, but not any more. Fumes are possible. I did use pt for all wood on the bottom of the trailer. We always have the fan running when in it, which minimizes the fumes if any.
