My cheap quick built micro-camper

Postby CarTopCamper » Sat Sep 14, 2013 9:46 pm

Hi All,
I'm new to this board but have been getting some great ideas here. I have a 30 mpg subcompact car that I'd like to use for camping road trips, however the towing capacity is only 1000 lbs. My goal is to build a simple trailer that sleeps 2 adults and 2 small kids, weighs less than 500 lbs, and costs less than $2000. I'd also like to use the trailer when not camping to haul small stuff that won't fit into the car. I'll post my progress somewhere in the regular forum area, I just wanted to introduce myself here.

With your parameters, I would build one of these. Approx. 500 lbs. dry weight, can sleep 4+. I belive approx. $500.00 to build.

Yes, a Tear Drop that will sleep Four, and still be under 1000 lbs and $2000.00 will be tough!

I would look at building a 4' x 9' with a almost 3/4 of a radius on the back. That would add a about 8"at 2 feet off the floor. Then make a door in the kitchen wall so a loft bed would use the kitchen counter for part of the bed. You would have to take down the kitchen and store it below the counter when using the loft. You would have a 5' long loft. with a full length bed under it. To keep the cost down you would have to make your own doors and use small utility vinyl sliders for windows. Use gate hinges and a aluminum strip in the shape of a upside down W on the hatch to seal the crack . Then use enamel paint with harder on the outside, it should be stored out of the weather when not in use. I know its not the best way to build ,but it is hard to keep the cost and weight down and build 4 place tear. These are just my thoughts
