Hello from Boise!

Postby Watercamper » Wed Feb 26, 2014 10:49 pm

Well - my wife and I finally decided on a teardrop. Now it's up to me to try and wade through all of this wonderful information that you have on this site and settle on a design. Luckily, I'm one of those guys that actually likes doing that kind of stuff. I much prefer making the mistake on the computer rather than in the shop :D I had some pre-conceived ideas on how to build one before I found this site. Some were actually valid! Some - not so much.

I did find that one of the members of the group is from my area and has built a wooden framed design. I've already contacted him and hope to see it once it comes out of hibernation. And I just found the link to order the Steve Frederick Shop Manual. That should be some good reading! Thank you in advance for all of this info!

It does take a while to wade through all the information this site has to offer. I don't think I explored everything yet. Have fun with your build! :applause:

Hello, from the Salmon River.

I used Steve F's manual and found it invaluable. Starting build #2 soon for the sis.

Welcome to the Forum
There was a great buy on the For Sale area of this Forum........if it is still available.
It is in Washington . Complete chassis and parts that will be needed for the completion of a build of whatever style you choose.

What size and what style are you planning? I am in Meridian and comtemplating a build of my own.

Hi!

That's the question as of now. I've zeroed in on the Grumman 2 for now - that could change. It will probably be a 5 x 8. I'm an engineer so I'm approaching this as I would any other design at work. I've started a document where I can keep all of my thoughts/ideas/ideas of others as I'm reading through this wealth of knowledge. I do have some specifics: lightweight - I plan on using a gas efficient TV; function over final appearance (this should drastically cut down the amount of build time); ease of construction & of course, cost. I do plan on drawing up the TD prior to starting construction and calculating it's weight & axle placement.

I have a wood shop and I've built furniture and cabinets so the woodworking part isn't new to me. I am extremely interested in the foamies but not to the extent of wrapping in canvas so it will probably be a hybrid - think thin plywood skins around a foam interior with minimal framing.

How about you? Which way are you going? PM me if you want and we can exchange info, ideas, etc. There is a local guy here that I've already contacted. His build is currently in storage but he'll be pulling it out soon. He'll be calling when that happens. Maybe we could both meet there when this happens. I particularly want to look at the way the seals were done. I've got my own ideas but I don't want to re-invent the wheel if I don't have to.

I am looking at trying a 5x10 benroy. I don't have much wood working under my belt. I am more of a steel guy. I called Henderson wheel today. They can make me a tortion axle for $188. It takes about 2 weeks. I will probably order it today and pic up the steel after the axle comes in. My wife wants the trailer done for the Watershed music festival at the Gorge the first week of August.
