Hi new member here from central Texas

Postby TeriL » Sun Apr 20, 2014 10:29 pm

Hi,

I just joined but have lurked off and on for a couple of years. Now that I have satellite internet I can lurk a lot more. Most of the members here seem nice and safe compared to some other forums I've seen.

As my info says, I'm located in central Texas in Burnet county. For the non-natives, it is pronounced "burn it" :D Texans have an interesting garbling of words. I can give many other examples.

I'm a retired engineer (mechanical and electrical). Female and single. As my degrees indicate, I'm very mechanically inclined and computer/electronics (not a ham) oriented. My interests are all over the place but astronomy and optics/telescopes have been my passion since childhood. I have interests in home design and construction, machines, airplanes (originally I went for a degree in aeronautical), sailing and lately, Foamies and just lately, motorcycles. As I said, my interests are all over the place and just about anything but politics and religion grab my interest.

I'm usually a lurker but I have gotten interested in the Foamies. So I signed up to ask questions and get comments on my ideas as well comment on others projects.

Welcome Teri, you are in the right place to learn about trailer construction that's for sure. What ever you decide to build, you'll never run short on advice from all the great people on this forum. Larry :D

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the welcome.

From what I've seen, it's pretty obvious there's no shortage of advice from the folks on this forum. Sometimes too much, like drinking from the proverbial fire hose.

Hi BC Toys,

Thank you for the welcome from another native Texan.

I am planning on building a Foamie. See viewtopic.php?f=55&t=59572 for my ideas.

I've been to Las Vegas twice on business trips but never got to see Hoover Dam which I really wanted to see. I'm gambling gene deficient, but I did enjoy watching people gamble thier money away. To each their own.

Hey Teri, Welcome to the sight, and good luck with your build. Two weeks ago I took a mini vacation away from work down to Fort Davis State Park. Took the tour of McDonald Observatory while I was there. I would recommend it if you have not already been there. Look forward to meeting you at a camp out. Ronnie :)

Hi Rockinrobin ,

Thank you for the welcome.

Yes, I've been to Davis Mountains State Park many times. It inspired me to buy property nearby on the south side of the mountains. I had plans to retire there, but changed my mind. I just sold it last year but I still love the area. I love Big Bend National Park too which also influenced my buying the property in the Davis Mountains. I NEED to go back and see the many places I have very fond memories of.

Hi BC Toys,

Are Valley of Fire and Mt Charleston anywhere near Las Vegas? I've been to Great Basin NP. Very nice after a long day of travel from Yosemite NP. I do need to see the Lake Tahoe area.

Hi Rockinrobin,

Spring and fall are the best times to visit Big Bend NP. Spring is popular for the wildflowers in the desert. Best temp is March. April starts to get warm and May is hot. June I believe is the hottest time until the summer "monsoons" cool things down some. The Chiso mountains in July isn't too bad. Fall is good with some flowers if there had been rain.

Spring is crowded as everyone wants to see the wildflowers if there have been winter rains. If you have high ground clearance, there are some easy to drive to "primitive" camp sites. I like the desert for the peace and quite. A lot of wild life too!

Hi bc toys,

I never thought there was anything near Las Vegas but desert. Nice to know Nevada isn't just a wasteland of gambling for which I am lacking the gambling gene. Must be the reason I became an engineer. :D
