B.C. Canada - traditional style, unusual construction

Postby coquitlamglenn » Tue Jul 22, 2014 1:52 am

Hello everyone -
I've been lurking here for years - I started building two months ago, maiden voyage in less than a week.

I am a woodworker, with an architecture background. I focus mostly on bent ply modern pieces, and have been intrigued by the idea of making custom curved structural insulated panels to construct a teardrop. The base structure of my trailer is made from 1/8" thick birchply + 1/2" foam + 1/8" birchply - pressed in my vacupress over curved forms. It is incredibly strong, and incredibly lightweight. The hatch, for example, is under 3/4" thick, is very rigid, and weighs about 20 lbs. I am covering the whole thing in canvas and paint.

Now that I am well into my build - I will start a build journal. I have designed several interesting details, including a hatch that requires no seal and a reversable high capacity fan made from a 12v radiator fan with a rheostat (More CFMs than a fantastic fan, and more adjustable -for under $40) If you would like to skip ahead, you can see some images here: http://instagram.com/vurvdesign

Otherwise, see you on the forum.

Glenn

Oregon Coast - Beachside state park

I usually get a lot of attention for my right hand drive JDM 4x4 van - but this time I felt like a rock star because of all the attention my trailer got! Now that I'm back, I will try to get a start on my build journal soon.

Your Tear looks absolutely wonderful!
Hope you enjoy camping in it as much as you did building it.
We look forward to meeting you somewhere down the road, and having you become one of our B.C. Tear Jerkers Chapter members! :)
Please PM me if you are interested and I will give you all of the details.

brian and sandy - thanks for the welcome - if the stars align, perhaps we will meet one day.

Shadow Catcher - I figure that a family camper should be easily spotted, from the air. We get off the beaten track from time to time, and I like being easy to find. Plus - I love bright colours. Why does it seem like every mass produced camper white or beige anyway?

Well you are so close it would only take 2 stars to make a straight line?
There was talk at our gathering to have a get together at Baker Lake in Wa. (which is rally next door to you.) sometime in mid September??
We would love to have you join us.
