Newbie From the North Coast!

Postby fullon627 » Thu Aug 14, 2014 12:27 am

Hello ladies and Gents! Ken here, from the north coast of California. Married 35+ years, 5 children (adults) and 3 and 7/8ths grandchildren. I own a auto and marine repair facility In Eureka. My business is 90% boats however. I've owned every different type of rv there is (and then some). Been lurking on this site for six months ever since my 27 year old daughter asked me to build her a small camping trailer to pull behind her Dodge Caliber. I have to thank everyone here for getting my juices flowing! My avatar is a drawing of what my daughter wants it to look like. I will be posting my build soon and hopefully not burden everyone here with to many questions. Thanks!!

Welcome, Ken!
My husband and I are locals and look forward to crossing paths with you soon. There is an active group of teardroppers in this area so be sure to check out the region of Jefferson State on this site. If you would like to see more of what we cook and where we camp, check out the icons below. Joanie :)

Welcome Ken
Don't worry you will get the Grove back in 2015.........as the IRG is only held every 2 years!
And I don't think the July long weekend was Dean & Joanie's first choice??
Maybe after you build one for your daughter you will be Hooked like the rest of us and join in the Fun!

We rent the Grove every year. This year was bad, river wise. First year not being able to swim. Good weather wise. That left everyone with lots of time to cook! I have a very small fifth wheel (under 7' wide and only 18' long including the overhang). that I bought two years ago just for Pamplin Grove and Swimmers Delight. It's the perfect size for two. Been going to the "grove" for twenty five years. Use to bring a 24' 8'6" wide trailer in there but the redwoods are getting fatter on the path, in old age like me! I am now hooked, line and sinker on small camp trailers! My other children now want me to build one for them! I told my daughter today that I would like to borrow her pink camp trailer for 2016. She didn't say yes or no. She just smiled. Ken

Hi Ken and welcome. I too am a new builder. Your avatar looks strikingly like my build. The forum has so much information, that I cannot imagine not being able to find the answers you seek. All the members are very willing to share ideas and techniques with you.

I was fortunate enough to spend some very wonderful time at Centerville Beach in the "60's and have always thought I would like to return and revisit the area. I am close to retiring (3 years) and at some point I intend to work my way up to that part of the country.

Good luck with your build and happy trails!

Welcome to the site Ken. For such a small community Eureka is a hotbed of teardrop builders and campers. We have at least 6 or 7 in Humboldt County. Plenty of information here and good luck with your build.

Thanks' John and Jerome! Started building it a few weeks ago. I have to say, it's best fun I've had in a while! John, I spent a few weeks in San Antonio in July/August of 1972. At Lackland Air Force base (basic training). Have to say, I wouldn't want to do that ever again in August!

I have to say I understand how you felt when you went to basic here. August is no time to be trying to get acclimatized to South Texas weather. I'm glad you are having fun building your trailer. Mine was a great learning experience for me. The first time you get to use it, will be over the moon, especially if you are camped out underneath some towering redwoods! Take care

Actually John, this will be my daughters trailer. I may never get to use it. I have a very small fifth wheel anyhow. Only 18.5 feet long including the overhang. 7 feet wide. The actual stand up part is only 12 feet long. It has a huge rear bathroom for such a small trailer. Most of the time when I go camping in the redwoods. I find that I go to asleep in my nice camp chair by the campfire, only to wake up somewhere around 4am with squirrels running over me! BTW I have cooked bacon in the nude and it smarts!
