Hello from Navarre Florida...

Postby jlovell25 » Thu Oct 15, 2015 9:13 am

Hi all, I have been reading the forums for about 6 months now and have finally decided to join and start posting. I've been researching designs and trying to figure out what I want to build and think I am close. The attached picture is the profile I have been working with. It's a combination of Cub, Grumman 2, and Atma designs. I was looking for something that had the traditional look of a Cub but had some of the functional benefits of the Grumman 2 and Atma. this is what I ended up with. Please review and let me know if you see any flaws.

Welcome, and I like that profile a lot. In fact it looks very much like the one I came up with, also a modified Grumman 2. Personally I like the overall look of it, and it certainly is aerodynamic. Throw in that extra bit of interior storage space and you have a winner. Are you planning to add a tongue box? I was looking at a build a couple weeks back where they built a box that fitted nicely against that front curve.

Thanks Cory. I am planning to add a tongue box, just haven't decided how big I want it to be yet. I am looking at the boxes that are on the Silver Beetle and Atma as examples. I'm trying to get that worked out so I can finish my frame plans. Part of my design specs was to maximize the space inside without losing the look of the traditional Cub. I really wanted to get rid of any dead floor space at the end of the camper. I think I am even going to curve the rear cabinet faces to match the galley lid curve so I can use all that space. The overall measurement on the profile are 4 high and 10 long (4x10).

Welcome! You find some great folks here with lots of wonderful ideas.
It will be a full day trip for you or make a weekend of it, but on the weekend of Nov 6 there will be about 50 teardrops at the gathering in Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine. It goes from Friday 6th thru Sun 8th. I went to one of these before I started my build and it made so many things so much easier. You get to see all different designs, sizes, shapes and materials, at all levels of completion.

Welcome to the Forum! :applause:
I love your profile!
But I would definitely add a tongue box build into the curve as suggested.
Ant for extra cabin space I would lose that large cabinet attached to the back of the galley, or at least down size it to just meet your needs.....flat screen, stereo, etc.
Or just a shelf to hold a sweatshirt or light jacket for those middle of the night trips to the bathroom.
Another thing I would consider is a "basement" This under bed storage is wonderful.
We are currently on our second build and have 1" of extra height in our new cabin, and when I asked Sandi what she how she would like me to use that extra space? She replied "make the basement deeper.
With "Miss Piggy" we have 8" (just enough room for those Rubbermaid under bed linen storage totes) "Kermit" will have 9" in depth and a full basement rather than a half. All of our clothes get sored in these totes!
Good Luck with your build.

I think you should consider bringing the galley counter piece into the cabin and using it to form the bottom shelf of your storage area. It makes for a strong and simple part of the build. You can add screws on top of it into the lower bulkhead and then put your upper bulkhead in and screw it from the bottom of this counter/shelf piece.

I also like having two stepped shelves in the rear of the cabin with 3" lips––no swinging cabinet doors. It keeps everything accessible but mostly out of sight.

The lower shelf is 13.5" above the mattress and I have never felt it cramp my leg room. You can have the second shelf protrude farther in, but those clothes hooks are worth their weight in gold.

The other thing that you might consider is creating a lipped shelf (or headboard) with your forward storeage. Something like this:

You can put your books, glasses, or whatever else you may need at night. It's handy! (And the sliders work great with bedding.)
