Greetings from Calgary

Postby Boreal » Mon Mar 21, 2016 11:24 am

So, hello folks. Calgary Alberta, representing.

I've just pulled the trigger on a new (used) trailer with the aim of building a three-sleeper (nine year old daughter needs to sleep somewhere *other* than the roof).

Honestly, I'm approaching this with slightly mixed emotions. On the one hand, we are tent campers - backpackers, canoers, all that wilderness stuff. But I'm getting just a bit tired of car-camping and sleeping on the ground. Just turned 50, so, like, things change I suppose. Also, to get out for even a weekend takes almost a day of planning, packing, and arranging. Practically, this means that we don't go for weekends. We're hoping that a fully stocked and packed teardrop will make it easier to get out.

On the downside, we're not trailer or RV people. That's a big issue. ;)

So here we go. Nice to meet you all. Here's what we're starting with (I'll begin a build thread as soon as I figure out where to do that) and post some more ideas about the design and stuff.

Welcome Boreal, as a non-tenter, I can relate to your not being an RVer or trailer person. However, all of that will change, once you find out how comfortable and handy a small teardrop trailer can be. When loaded up while parked at your place, and all you need to get out into the wilderness, is a block of ice and a bag of groceries for the week end. I felt the same way, and wow, what a difference. I will warn you, you will probably be getting a note from Brian, a fellow Canadian. He has a wonderful farm and RV camping area, plus all kinds of teardrop info. I do hope you re-think your aversion to trailers, they are so light-weight and handy, plus plenty of room for the youngster, for a comfortable weekend in the woods. Good luck on what ever your camping plans are, we're here to help you decide.

Welcome to the Forum
And Roly was right....I am always looking for ne "Canadian" Teardrop Campers.
Yes...Teardrop Camping is a whole new world to those of us who love nature and have been avid tent campers.
It is so much easier than you could ever dream it to be, and so far from RV camping in so many ways!
You will have to realize, that at 9 years old your daughter is at the age where she would probably like to have a friend along on your camping trips anyway. ;) This mean that your tent will not be put in mothballs, but will become the expanded area for your daughter and friend to sleep in while Mom and Dad sleep off of the round in the Teardrop.
The Teardrops Galley will act as the camp kitchen and focal point of your camp area.
And in 5 or 6 years (which is going to go by way too fast) your daughter will probably opt not to come camping with you or will definitely want to sleep separate from you anyway??? ;)
You are going to love the Teardrop people you are about to meet!

alright! another teardrop coming to Calgary.
You will love camping with a teardrop. Way more comfortable than a tent and with the galley at the back cooking is so much easier. And you are still outside. You are right about the big trailer and RV people, the bigger the RV, the less likely you will ever see anybody outside. The teardrop does provide the best of both worlds.
Good luck with your building.
Cheers,
Don

Thanks for the warm welcome, especially from my fellow Canuckians

I am quite sure that we've found the right mix between comfort and the tent-camping lifestyle we're used to. I know we've made the right choice.

If your interested in following the build with me, I've started a thread over here. It's started; it's real! Just ordered a thousand bucks of exotic plywoods and stuff. ;)

Cheers!
