21st century grumman

Postby urquat » Fri Apr 08, 2016 7:24 pm

Hi All, I'm Jason from the UK,
Along with my good mate we are designing and building something a bit special, a true to spec original grumman, with some awesome design aspects, a 9' version using a formula to make an exact copy of the original, and using 1930's aircraft knowhow... When my mate told me about teardrops I started looking into how people build them and straight away I was horrified to be honest, you buy 8x4 sheets, cut holes in them (which seems like such a waste), stick small amounts of insulation in them.. not very good for our English climate (wet, wet or wet), So I got my design head on and thought how can we improve this design, but let her use it all year round in our UK climate. 1st we need insulation, at least 50mm or more, only way I could see we do this is either make the frame out of metal... OR steam bent lamination, we went for option 2.
This is our 1/4 scale prototype model that has surpassed even my thoughts.
Can anyone please explain why it was called the grumman? was it because Leroy Grumman was an aircraft designer and it so looks like a wing he may of designed??

Welcome to the Forum Jason...

You two need to keep your focus on the trailer or it will never get built!!!

Okay, now I really like the jig you made for the bent frames... and excellent frames ... Great job!!! :applause: :applause:

Keep us posted on the TRAILER build... 8) 8) :pictures: :pictures:

Hi Jason from the UK, I'm Roly from sunny southern California. Welcome to the forum. No, not many of us build with 3/4 inch sides with holes cut in them for a tiny bit of insulation. I build with 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch sidewalls, have no problem with the lack of insulation and so far have built 5 of em. Check out some of the builds in the Hall of Fame at the top of the board index page, and perhaps you will alter your plans. Ask any questons you have, we are here to help. Take pics and post em. At any rate, good luck on your build, and when you make your maiden voyage, swing on by my place, I have full hookups and plenty of room.
:) 8) Roly, the li'l ol' woody TD builder, user and such.

Thanks AZ :D , first issue we had was in the UK we don't normally have a garage attached :x , I'm lucky because I have quite a big yard, we're just finishing off the shop build first which should be done in the next week. In the UK this is the biggest shop I can build without planning.

Oh btw, we are also going to be using the wall to mount the jig, why clutter floor space?

Welcome!
Good use of space!
Have you looked at the foamy entries?
If you are deeply concerned with insulation you should
consider them.. Also with the humidity present there
pay attention to the venting needs.

Push on and please make lots of pictures.

Hi Jason,
I like the new garage and workroom... I agree that hanging the frame jig on the wall is a great way to save space. I would think that if the trailer is used in colder weather, insulation will be a big help... I also agree that moisture can be a problem and the use of necessary vapor barrier, and ventilation is necessary...

Keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing your progress... :pictures:

Been a while since I first posted, we're prototyping and constructing, we should have the jig base ready in the next day or two
