Michigan newb

Hi. I'm Mike from Michigan.

I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel project that is nearing completion. My wife will kill me if I start another project before finishing the kitchen. But.... A guy can think about the next project before finishing one project... Right???

I do a lot of woodworking and have a fully equipped shop. The family is the understanding and patient wife, and two preteen daughters and the 90 pound lab puppy. We bought a big pop up trailer 12 years ago when daughter 1 was born. Before that we tent camped. I got tired of dumping gas 365 days a year in the Yukon XL tow vehicle only to pull a trailer a few times a year. We sold it and the popup 4 years ago and went back to tent camping. Tent camping with a 5x10 utility trailer.

I built "chucky" the chuck wagon that rolls up in the utility trailer. He rolls off and gets plugged in at the campground. Has propane and a stove plus electric. It stores all the kitchen stuff. I built it because my wife said the kitchen was the thing she liked most about the popup. Everything is there.

So, now I'm thinking why not build a teardrop? The kitchen/galley in the back. I can sleep on a better mattress and our girls are old enough to stay in a tent by us.

Has anyone built a removable teardrop? We have a nice 5x10 utility trailer with removable wood sides. I was thinking I could build the tear on top of the utility trailer and then somehow (jacks? Hoist?) remove the trailer and convert back to a utility trailer for hauling lumber and doing my remodeling projects. Is this a terrible idea?

Thanks,

Mike

No ! But you know what will happen........ You will get involved in the build and a gas line here and an electric circuit there will make is so difficult to remove the unit you will never remove it. Just knuckle under and buy another utility trailer for the lumber and dump runs and dedicate a frame to the drop.

But yes it can be done as a convertible unit with good planning.

I had envisioned a little deck to match the height of the trailer. just a few pieces of pipe inserted under the body and roll it off the trailer and onto the deck (storage perch) after all they built the pyramids that way didn't they. I have move many a mini barn just that way !
Growing older but not up !
