Welcome! Go for a 5' wide one, not a 4' wide one. That helps a little.

If you build one, or have one built, get your wife involved in the process. I measured Shelly lying down to make sure we built the bed long enough (she has an inch on me). As Sharon says, go as close to 5 feet wide as you can. Height in the cabin was very important to us, as we like to sit up and read, or watch DVDs, so we measured each other sitting up, and gave ourselves several inches of head room above that.

We also planned out what we want in there with us, and planned out a comfortable place to keep everything. We have our clothes in a spacious cabinet above our legs, a drawer with DVD player under that, but enough above our legs that we're comfortable, Shelly made some cloth wall hangings with pockets for water bottles, keys, glasses, my wallet, and our phones, and we even have a bookshelf behind us above the headboard.

Ventalation is very important. We have a fan on the ceiling, and windows in our doors.

We tried using a futon mattress for the first two trips, then bought a memory foam mattress.

What about the friend's teardrop didn't your wife like? Is it something you can correct on yours? If it's general claustrophobia, you may not have many options, but if it's comfort, there is a lot that can be done with a custom build, especially if you are aware of the potential issues in planning.

When we were first looking at teardrop designs and current teardrops on the market my first thoughts were I did not want to feel like I was climbing into a coffin. It soon became obvious the more windows the better.... and this is one of the things that attracted me to Vistabule's configuration, that large front window.
