painting the steel frame and insulation

Postby beccae » Tue Sep 24, 2013 10:44 am

As I take the plywood down to insulate,I should use a rust inhibitor paint on the frame and then insulate? Last thing I want in a trailer is a guy with bad lungs and mold.Plan to run dehumidifier all the time and vent water outside.I live on the wet side of Oregon and am looking at the next 9 months of rain.We started airing the trailer out as soon as we got it ,we were having warm, dry weather and I am leary of formaldehyde and George's lungs.Plan to do the ramp door, the front of trailer and the small door first.Any suggestions would be appreciated!! :worship: I am not well to do,so no real expensive suggestions please. Also have to figure out what to put on the ramp door to cover the wood.We will be using it as a patio when it is not down to move the mobility scooters in and out.

If it were me I would not worry with painting the metal I would just put in the insulation and tape it up with gray duct tape,?
I have not put anything on my rear deck and I can't count how many times like yesterday I left it open and it had rained before I got back home, I should have known better it has been raining a lot here in south GA.
I did move the trailer so it's in the direct sun so it bakes when the sun is shining and dries out fine. the wood has aged but looks fine,
I try and keep it open as much as possible if I put the gas cans and generator inside = to keep them from getting rained on it has a gas smell, I have a fan I use to keep it aired out.
you can buy 5x7 rugs at walmart for 20.00 they have all types and they work prefect in a trailer and can be rolled up or moved around or used outside.

Paint wont help with mold, but it definitely wont hurt anything as far as preventing rust and extending the life of the trailer. I primed the floor and ramp door of my trailer then used roll on bed-liner (Herculiner) over it and it is holding up well. My only complaint it that it does make it a little harder to clean because of the texture, but I would rather have some grip if it gets wet.

I was going to paint for rust and insulate to cut down on condensate and heat transfer. We will be taking the cats and dog with us,I'd love to find something that cat hair won't stick to  Gorrilla tape is on my list to tape over the insulation.

Gorilla tape is the best tape money can buy, but it is a lot more than gray duct tape and probably overkill for taping over insulation where your going to put up wood or something else over it.
they make different types of gray tape or what some call Alabama Chrome, when you go to buy it just peel it back and see how much grip it has, the cheap stuff has about half the grip as the better tape.
But if you want the best gorilla tape is it.

Something that I've heard also makes a good flooring in trailers are "coin rubber" mats also.

Yup,rubber flooring was my choice (coin ) but it is spendy! Unless I find a good deal,it will most likely be linoleum and throw rugs.My local carpet layer pulled up yesterday to show me his new ride and offered to get me a really good deal on linoleum plus he will install it.I don't think I want it tacked or glued down-need to allow for expansion and contraction and flexing of floor. He has kept me in throw rugs for years,we are down to 2 cats and one dog,in our wet climate it's best just to change rugs periodically. All else fails,I'll be painting the floor with something waterproof.

Personally I'd go with a good quality floor paint to protect things regardless of
future floor coverings. As far as the insulation goes, If you use the proper
tape on all your insulation seams no water vapor should get to the cold wall to
condense. Yes a dehumidifier is a verrry good idea. JMHO
