Which Roof Paint did you use and durability

Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Application-Specific Coatings

Postby Engineer Guy » Sat Jul 23, 2011 8:39 pm

Ummm, a clarification to correct speculation is necessary, I think.

1. Heng's comes in 5 Gallon Buckets because it is meant to coat entire Roof areas. The ~$25- quart I bought was listed to cover ~100 sq. ft. I used it for seams because my TT has a Membrane Roof, and entire Roof coverage was not necessary.

2. In the scheme of all sorts of coatings I've used over the years. Heng's would be 'goopy', but would be no big deal when using an expendable Roller on an extension Handle. The slight PITA factor of application nets you long Roof life.

3. Of all the Coatings I've done recon about, Heng's is of a viscosity to last more than just a few years.

4. My recon, including reading on other Forums, suggested staying away from Big Box 'coatings', like those from Henry. The fibers in Heng's and similar products help resist thermal expansion/contraction, and vibration effects not seen in fixed Roofs.

IMO, using Home, 'fixed-installation' Roof products on RVs is like sending a Boy to do a Man's job. The Roof conditions are not at all similar; consider a Product designed for RV Applications.

Sorry I thought Hengs was like kool seal. I didn't realize it was it was a thinner coating. I grew up in the RV business. My grand father owned a dealer ship for 25 years. Me being down low on the pecking order sealing roofs and washing trailers was two of my main jobs as a kid lol.

The Henry coating I used is not a sealer.. Its just considered an elastic coating to reflect heat. Like I said I wasn't trying to seal the roof just cool it down. One of the reasons I went with a cargo trailer is the roof is just a sheet of metal.. The edges already have a thick coating of sealer from the factory. No real reason to seal the solid metal just the seams.

@ Steve_Cox, does yours have that blue tint look that you said you used?

I wonder how long it will really last on the camper whether it's Cool Seal or that elastomeric silicone??

Premium White Elastomeric Roof Coating 63-600 with a little dark blue colorant to get the shade of blue I wanted. It's been on there 3 and a half years so far.

Well, after much reading and searching the internet and the local stores, I have decided to use Snow Roof Systems Mobile Coat on my CT. The main reason is availbility. The local Ace Hardward carries it. It has a long service life and a stated reflectvity of 85%. Their Snow Roof product has a reflectivity of 90%. The Mobil coat has added primers and cleaners(?) to help it to bond to bare metal. I think I will use the mobil coat for the first coat, followed by the Snow Roof for the second coat. The cost is reasonable (<$25.00/gal). My roof is in good condition and all I am trying to accomplish is to reduce the thermal loading on the roof. I thinkl these products should do the job.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with these products? I would like to hear any experiences, good or bad with using these products.

Great information, but where are you guys finding this paint in gallon cans?
I could only find the 5 gallon buckets at Home Depot.
Camping World had something similar, but it was $39.00 per gallon.

OK Guys, give up your sources....

Gadget Man,
Snow Roof Systems', Snow Roof and Mobile Coat are available at your local Ace Hardware. The Black Jack Ultra 1000 is available at Lowes and Home Depot. Cool Seal is also available at Ace Hardware. In my area, all three places stock them in the one gallon cans.

As I posted previously, I will be using the Mobile Coat for the first coat for adhesion, then the Snow Roof over that. For the two one gallon cans, It cost me Less than $50.00. I could probably get away with just using the Mobile Coat, but the Snow Roof has a little higher reflectivity. 90% versus 85%. In most areas, that probably would not matter, but I live in the desert portion of Washington States, and every little bit helps.

Thats odd, Our local HomeDepot sells all kinds of roof stuff in either 1 gallon or 5 gallon buckets. It was around 19 bucks for a gallon. One gallon did 2 coats on my 7x24 with some left over..

Insulation

Postby Jeffmo63 » Sat Aug 06, 2011 9:44 am

I insulated my roof with 1" foam board insulation (pink) in addition to painting the outside with rustoleum marine white. It really dropped the heat transfer to the inside. See photo album.

I am going to try this Kool coat stuff because I want to use a automotive paint on my roof. I don't want white and you can mix it into any paint it says. http://www.koolcoat.com/
