6x12 owners... Need help with measurement

Postby mlowry7 » Sat Jul 12, 2014 11:13 pm

I'm still trying to decide if I should get a 6x14 or if a 6x12 will work. Here's my idea.. A false wall in the rear to mount a window unit.. And a queen bed running lengthwise in front of that (since the 6' wide wont let me turn it widthwise). I'm just wondering if there will be enough room for this layout to lay all behind the side walk in door.

mlowry7, Howdy;

Tossed that same idea around for almost a year then settled on the 6X14
with a single axle (with brakes), and an extra 6" of height (I'm 6' 1.5").
I can use the "extra" 2 feet at the rear for the storage/whatever, and still
have all of the 6X12 area for my living area. Think of as a 6X12 with 'storage'.

I have a 30" deep galley at the rear doors, then a full size bed running lengthwise. There are a few inches left to the side door. Our trailer is a 6x12 tandem-axle Load Runner.

I would agree with the others that there is not much penalty to the 14 footer, except a few hundred bucks and a few hundred pounds. That said, I haven't really regretted getting the shorter trailer. Being limited can actually be a good thing, the more space you have, the more stuff you drag around that you don't need.

I'm trying to come up with a floorplan myself. I think I will be going with the 6x12 with a V-nose. While poking around I have seen a couple AC mounts on false walls, This one is one that I like gallery/image_page.php?album_id=21&image_id=96960 since it mounts in the E-track and can be removed depending on season.

Are you thinking Ramp door or Barn door? I've got an idea floating around in my head that I think will work, I can't imagine I'm the first to come up with it based on the level of inventiveness that I've seen in the build photos. What I envision is using the barn doors to mount the galley in such a way that the galley can be used inside the CT with them closed in nasty weather. Weather permitting, you could then open the barn doors 90 degrees. With the doors open to 90, the galley is now exposed outside, and a wall that was the SIDES of the galley when inside now form a BACK wall to the galley, closing off the inside of the CT from the outside. This wall could have the AC unit mounted - say under the counter. When opened, it would vent heat and condensate outside and cold air inside. When closed it would be mostly out of the way under the counter. When not needed for winter camping, it could be removed and the hole covered or possibly replaced with a heater unit.

With some careful design and construction, the doors could continue opening to 180 and on to whatever maximum they have. This would split the galley into 2 halves, which might allow for more "cooks in the kitchen" or more hands to help with washing dishes and general cleanup. The "Wet" side might even allow for use as a shower. When open this far you would loose the ability to air condition, but now have full width access to the back of the trailer for loading and unloading gear, toys and people.

I have a 6 x 12. There are 103 inches between the edge of my side door and the back doors. That may vary by manufacturer. You can also request that the side door be either closer to the front or closer to the back. Closer to the front may make that front area less usable. Good luck!

My 6x12 V nose is 7' 3'' from the rear wall to the edge of the side door. It's a Carry On and the side door is a bit wider than normal, if I recall 34'' wide. It also sits 12'' back from where the edge of the V nose starts. And yes I know, that adds up to just a little over 11'. So before you start laying out based on 6x12, make sure that is what your trailer actually measures. By the way, and you've probably already discovered, 6' width is an outside dimension. Mine measures 69'' wide with only 1/4'' paneling on the inside - way to narrow for me to sleep sideways comfortably as I measure almost 73''. I hope that helps in your decision process. I use my trailer for hauling still, and I take my KLR 650 with me sometimes also, so I'm in the process of making fold down sofas that convert into a full width bed running from the back forward. I used the V nose for a cabinet containing a sink, battery and electric center, porta potty, etc... For cooking I have a chuck box I made years ago the I set up between the sofa bed and cabinet on the street side opposite the side door - that way I can cook outside when the weather is nice and I want to keep the smells out of the trailer.
