Real butyl does not harden or dry out.

it's the exact stuff I used.

After havering them only. Six inches from the top of the beds for a couple of years. It is just a little more privet, when you bump them in the night they are cold when it is cold out. And the biggest reason is it will make the wife happy.

I understand that. I will keep it in mind when I am ready to make the cut.

Good lead MtnDon,
I went to the link you gave me and did some more research.
I found this link giving a little more info on Butyl Sealant: http://sundownersailsagain.com/butyl-tape/
It also gave this link for Custom Marine Services which had some interesting information on their butyl tape: http://sundownersailsagain.com/butyl-tape/ and how it works for marine environments.

The eBay link you gave is for Butyl Tape sold by Frank Bear at Vintage Technologies at http://www.teardroptrailerparts.com/ through eBay.

I added a roll of it to my eBay window order I am preparing. Unfortunately shipping costs is more then the tape, but I like the company.
I just received my Fantastic Fan and Vent from them.

Regarding the interior trim ring; to me it was worth the extra money to find windows that came with the interior trim ring. But I like some of the alternatives posted here.

Regarding butyl tape. This website has an interesting statement about butyl. Apparently EPA regulations forced manufactures to change the way butyl tape was formulated. And therefor the new stuff isn't as good as the old stuff. This guy claims to have formulated a good marine grade butyl, for what's it's worth: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/butyl_tape. I have a buddy in the sail boat industry that swears by it.

That being said, it's expensive and you have to order it. This is the butyl tape I've used on my trailer. Maybe not the best, but Camping World is right up the road from me and it's easy to get when I need it: http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/butyl-tape-3-4-x30/39160
