Type of trailer

Postby Wookie97 » Mon Feb 16, 2015 6:44 pm

Well guys, I have been lurking on here for some time and there are some great builds listed here. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger, within the next week or so, on purchasing a new trailer for my project. So far it seem everyone has gone with the standard 12' to 20' tandem axle and some have had to do the Spring over Axle conversion for a little extra ground clearance. Im looking at two trailers right now and not sure which one I want.

1. First is a V-Nose 8.5' x 20' Pace America for about $8,200. I really like this trailer and it has plenty of room for everything. I live in Colorado and plan on camping in the mountains some and the firs issue I see is ground clearance. I can do the conversion but is it actually enough.

2. Second trailer is a V-Nose 8.5' x 21' Snowmobile Trailer for $7,500. These already set pretty high with plenty of ground clearance underneath for water tanks and will make it on the mountain roads without dragging the back. So far I haven't seen anyone use a trailer like this for a conversion. These trailers have two ramps, one in the rear and one on the front Left in the V section. I have some ideas on how to incorporate that ramp and make it useful.

So, what is going in the trailer.

Shower
Toilet
Beds (fold down and possibly one that lowers from the roof. not sure yet)
Heater
Maybe A/C in the future
Couple batteries mounted underneath (Saw an awesome design on here for that)
Solar panels in the future

Back to the main question, Has anyone seen a thread on here about using a Snowmobile trailer or is there anything you see that would cause you to not use it?

Thanks for the input.

I don't recall ever seeing someone build with a snowmobile type trailer. However, if you order from the factory it should be possible to have that first trailer built without using dropped axles (that make it sit lower) OR to buy it with torsion axles like the Dexter. They can be ordered with different ride heights. There is also a torsion axle from Flexiride that has splined axles ends so the height can be relatively easily adjusted by removing and reinstalling the arm. .

Do you have any pictures.
When I looked at trailers I liked one that was a snowmobile trailer. But it had low interior height. I'm short so not really the problem. The problem was the man door went all the way up to meet ceiling. I want an awning there would have been no clearance for man door.
The trailers I looked at were all aluminum and most all snowmobiles are all aluminum ( here anyway) but cargos were all 16 centers snowmobile trailers were a mix of 24 and 16. Snowmobiles are lighter weight then a side by side like a ranger or RZR, and lower!
Is just going to be for camping or a toy hauler?

Attached are pics of the two trailers. I am pretty confident in my welding ability and could fab brackets to raise the ground clearance of the Black Car trailer. But if I don't have to and the Snowmobile trailer works why go through the trouble. From the description the walls on both are 16" OC. The main difference is the Snow trailer is rated for 7K and the other for 10K. Also the inside height of the Snow is 6' 1" and the Car is 7'.

Thanks for posting the pics.
Ok I see that there similar to what I looked at. Much bigger
What is your use? Insulating? Do you need the extra weight capacity? Or is interior height what's needed.
I also only look at trailers that had RV style doors- but everyone is different.

Unless you live in the arctic, I would recommend a lighter colored trailer. Black would be Hot Hot Hot in the summer. Also, not sure if it is a photographic artifact, but that black trailer seems to have some gnarly/bendy looking panels on the front. Let us know how it goes!

I thought that was the pic- hard to see on cell phone. But the thickness of the skin may be different too. I found it was very hard to shop for myself so I'm not going to be much help.
I wanted
16" wheels got 15"
Wanted light color got 1/2 black
Wanted 6'6" interior got 7'
Wanted unfinished interior got finished.
Wanted roof vent got none.
I refused to order and pick-up at factory so it will do.

It going to be a dual use trailer. Im in the military and have to move every so often and there are some things I will not all them to move, then I use the trailer. Here in Colorado I do a lot of hunting and camping with the family. They like to have some creature comforts besides a tent. Majority of the time the trailer would be used for general off grid camping and hunting season. Eventually I would be taking a quad or two manybe one quad and a SS. I prefer dirt bikes but have to make the wife happy some.

I went an looked at the black one a few weeks ago and there is nothing wrong with the siding, must be the way the pics were taken. Besides ride height, the other thing I was looking as now was interior height. The 7' inside height of the Black one is nice, not sure how the 6' 1" of the Snow will be. Guess we will see this weekend when I go look at them again. I may be leaning toward the Black one.

Oh, yes there will be insulation going in the walls. I was debating on the color as well. I know the Black would get hot in the summer, they have a white one also I may look at. Black just looks better to me. LOL

Thanks for the input guys. Ill keep everyone updated as I get closer.
